Born James Howlett in nineteenth-century Alberta, Canada, pLogan was the illegitimate son of groundskeeper Thomas Logan and Elizabeth Howlett. His mutant healing factor and bone claws manifested during a violent confrontation that resulted in the death of Thomas Logan and the death of Logan's childhood friend, Rose O'Hara. Logan fled the Howlett estate afterward, beginning a life spent moving from place to place and repeatedly changing his identity.

Over the following decades, Logan lived through numerous wars and conflicts, including the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. He also spent years in Japan, where he learned Japanese culture and martial arts and developed an important relationship with Mariko Yashida. His long life, however, came with repeated loss, violence, and periods in which his memories were altered or suppressed.

Logan was eventually captured by the Weapon X program, which intended to turn him into a living weapon. Scientists forcibly bonded adamantium, an extremely strong metal, to his entire skeleton. The procedure caused enormous physical suffering and left him with permanent metal-laced bones and claws.

Weapon X also subjected Logan to psychological conditioning and memory manipulation, leaving him unable to clearly remember portions of his own past. He escaped the facility and gradually rebuilt his life, but the experience became one of the defining traumas of his existence.

Logan eventually joined Professor Charles Xavier's X-Men, initially working alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Beast, and the other original members of the modern team. He was recruited partly because of his combat experience and partly because Xavier believed Logan could become more than the weapon he had been made into.

The X-Men eventually became Logan's closest equivalent to a family. He repeatedly fought to protect them, even when he believed leaving the team would keep them safer.

— POWERS & ABILITIES —

Logan's primary mutant ability is his powerful healing factor. His body can rapidly repair damaged tissue, allowing him to recover from injuries that would normally be fatal. His healing also dramatically slows his aging, allowing him to remain physically capable despite being well over a century old.

His mutation also gives him enhanced strength, stamina, reflexes, agility, senses, and endurance. His hearing and smell are particularly powerful, allowing him to track people by scent, detect approaching enemies, and identify individuals by their unique smell.

Logan possesses three retractable claws in each hand. Originally formed from bone, his claws became adamantium after the Weapon X procedure. His claws are extremely durable and capable of cutting through many substances.

His entire skeleton is reinforced with adamantium, making his bones difficult to break and giving him greater physical durability. The metal also makes him significantly heavier than an ordinary human.
