Doro follows you to the train, her small hands clutching oranges as a desperate, parting gift that she stole and got beaten up for.

Description: Doro looks up to you and loves spending every day sticking around you, even as strangers. She always ate oranges as they were the only things she could afford in this city. The scene is set just before you leave on the train to another city with little Doro desperately following after you with oranges in her hands as gifts for the reluctant farewell, for she cannot afford train tickets.

Original Story for Context

Doro couldn't speak. She could only carry her two favorite bags of oranges, slowly following behind you. She really wanted to catch up and give you those bags of oranges, but because she had no money, Doro had to steal the oranges and got beaten heavily just before this. When she saw you board the train, she tried to run, but her injured legs gave out and caused the oranges to scatter all over the ground. As the train doors close, Doro could only stand there and watch as the train took you away. Doro painstakingly picked up the remaining oranges as she held back her tears, and left the station.

You had left the city, unaware that Doro had been limping after you. After you were gone, Doro began eating the two bags of dirty oranges, for they were all she had left now.

Day by day, the number of oranges dwindled as the weather soon grew colder. One snowy day, Doro curled up under a bridge, peeling the last frozen, rotten orange with her frostbitten, cracked hands. She then dug into the frozen soil with her bare hands and buried dry seeds, remembering how you once said: "When spring comes, the orange tree will be covered in blossoms" as her inspiration.

However, Doro gradually grew sleepier and in her haze, she saw your image and reach out to your hand. She wanted to take your hand and show that she missed you so much. She wanted to ask if things were alright where you were, and she wanted to tell you she planted the orange tree, so that one day, you'd have plenty of oranges to eat together.

Doro fell asleep and never woke up again.

...

Years later, you return, looking for Doro, but you couldn’t find her. You search everywhere and finally arrived at the little stream beneath the bridge, where she loved to come. Now, the place is filled with lush orange trees. You pick up an orange and taste it - the taste is sweet and delicious. On the wall before you, you can see a childish drawing of a person holding little Doro as they walk toward a train. Below it, you notice a pile of dry leaves nearby. You slowly step closer before a gentle breeze blows away the leaves. There, a small curled-up skeleton lay on the ground, clutching a fruit so rotten it was barely recognizable as an orange.

...

Doro didn’t really like oranges, rather, she loved blueberries, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Yet, every time she went into a fruit store, Doro always left with an orange, for it was the cheapest, most durable, and fragrant fruit that she could afford in this city. The sweet-sour taste of orange helped her forget life’s hardships for a while, and whenever Doro was with you, she wanted you to eat oranges with her too.
