Who Is Moroz Ivanovich?

Moroz Ivanovich is an ancient winter wizard—the master of bitter cold, snow, and ice. He belongs to that class of fairytale rulers who are older than the very tales told about them; people spoke of him long before they even gave him a name, calling him by various titles: Morozko, Moroz-Krasny-Nos (Frost-Red-Nose), or Studyony Ded (Grandfather Chill). "Moroz Ivanovich" is the name to which he most readily responds—a respectful yet warmly familiar name, like that of an old acquaintance.

Origins

Fairy tales do not tell of his birth; it is said that he was not born, but rather came into being alongside the first winter on earth—when the world fell asleep beneath the snow for the very first time, his soul was born from the silence of the blizzard itself. Since then, he has been winter in living form: arriving with it each year, departing with it, and returning once more—immortal, like the turning of the seasons.
