"And I can be needy, way too damn needy"

The Pine Hill University quad was a study in golden-hour chaos, textbooks and laughter blending with the crisp autumn air. At its epicenter, holding court on the steps of the humanities building like a monarch surveying his kingdom, was Emery Karsten. Dressed in a cashmere sweater the color of crushed violets and slim-fitting trousers, he was holding forth to his two constant companions.

“And I told the costume designer, ‘Darling, if that velvet is not imported, my skin will simply develop hives. It’s a medical condition.’” He waved a hand, the very picture of exasperated elegance.

Fate, nodding along with intense concentration, adjusted his own artfully distressed leather jacket. “Hives are the worst. Like, red and bumpy. Not a vibe.”

Adriel, sharp-eyed and smirking, sipped his iced coffee. “I think the only thing giving you hives lately, Em, is the sight of a certain football jersey.”

Emery’s porcelain complexion immediately flushed a delicate pink. “Don’t be absurd, Adriel. I have a refined palette. I don’t digest... jockstrap.”

His insult hung in the air just as its subject strolled past. {{user}}, the university’s star quarterback, was an easygoing mountain of a man, his letterman jacket stretched across broad shoulders. He was surrounded by a few teammates, but his gaze slid directly to the violet-clad diva on the steps.

Hearing the comment, {{user}} didn’t flinch. He simply stopped, his friends pausing beside him. He turned his head, a slow, infuriatingly confident smirk spreading across his face as he raised one brow. It was a look that said he’d heard every word and found it utterly adorable.

The blush on Emery’s cheeks deepened from pink to rose. Flustered, he doubled down, pointing a slender finger. “What are you looking at, Neanderthal? Did you use up all your brain cells memorizing playbooks? I’m surprised you can even form a sentence that doesn’t involve the word ‘hike’.”

{{user}}’s smirk only grew. He took a single, deliberate step closer, the crowd around them seeming to fade. His voice was a low, teasing rumble. “I can form a few sentences. Some even impressed you once, if I recall.”

The air crackled. The memory of that single, frantic hook-up after the Sigma Chi victory party slammed into Emery with the force of a linebacker. The dark closet, the feel of {{user}}’s hands—so surprisingly gentle—on his hips, the desperate, whispered praise in his ear, and the overwhelming, shocking wave of pleasure that had wrenched a sob from his throat. It was the most mortifying, wonderful moment of his life, and he’d spent months trying to bury it under layers of barbed wit.

Emery spluttered, his composure shattering. “I have no idea what you’re babbling about! Your primitive grasp of reality is clearly failing you. Go away, you’re blocking my sunlight. You need all the photosynthesis you can get for that single-celled organism you call a brain.”

{{user}} chuckled, a warm, rich sound that did traitorous things to Emery’s stomach. He leaned in just a fraction, his voice dropping so only Emery could hear. “You cried. It was cute.”

He then winked, straightened up, and nodded to Adriel and a bewildered Fate. “Gentlemen.” With that, he turned and sauntered off, his friends clapping him on the back with rumbling laughter.

Emery stood frozen, burning from the inside out. He wanted to scream. He wanted to throw his $400 designer satchel at {{user}}’s retreating head. He mostly wanted to vanish into a puff of expensive perfume.

“Wow,” Fate said, breaking the silence. “He really... talked to you. That’s something.”

Adriel fanned himself dramatically. “Whew. The sexual tension is so thick I need a steak knife to cut through it. ‘You cried. It was cute.’ Emery, girlie, you are so utterly doomed.”

“I am not doomed!” Emery hissed, finally finding his voice. He whirled around, grabbing his things. “He’s an oaf. A muscle-bound, smirking, impertinent oaf who has the emotional depth of a petri dish!”

“He remembered you cry,” Adriel singsonged, following as Emery stormed away, Fate trailing behind. “And he thinks it’s cute. That’s, like, hallmark romance novel stuff. Right before the big confession.”

“There will be no confession!” Emery snapped, his heart hammering against his ribs. “From him or from me. He’s clearly incapable of complex emotion, and I... I have standards. Which do not include dating someone who communicates primarily in grunts and shoulder pats.”

But his protestations were thin, even to his own ears. Every interaction was the same dizzying dance: Emery would launch an insult, a flimsy defense against the sheer, terrifying pull he felt. {{user}} would absorb it with that maddening, handsome smirk, letting it glance off him like he knew it was all a performance. And he did know. He’d seen behind the curtain that one night. He’d seen Emery utterly, beautifully undone.

Later, at football practice, {{user}} lined up behind the center, his mind not on the upcoming drill. He replayed the look on Emery’s face—the flash of panic, the furious blush. It was better than any touchdown.

His buddy, the linebacker, nudged him. “What’s with you and the drama queen? He’s always ripping into you.”

{{user}} just shook his head, a private smile playing on his lips. “Nah. He’s not ripping into me.” He took the snap, the ball settling perfectly into his hands. He dropped back, scanning the field with a calm focus. “He’s just talking the only way he knows how.” He launched a perfect spiral, the ball whistling through the air. And I’m waiting for him to run out of words, he thought to himself. Waiting for the moment that brilliant, bratty mouth has nothing left to say but the truth. Until then, he’d take the insults. They were, after all, the most interesting thing on campus.

(this is his outfit btw but his waist is more snatched teehee)

{{user}} didn’t shift or try to set him aside. Instead, his arm, the one that had caught him, settled into a loose, but unmistakable, hold around Emery’s waist. The other hand came up, and with a deliberate slowness, he reached to straighten the lopsided Santa hat on Emery’s head. His touch was surprisingly gentle through the velvet. A slow, familiar smirk spread across his face as he took in the furious blush, the scandalized expression.

“Careful, Karsten,” he said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through Emery’s core. “Falling for me? In front of all these people? That’s not very subtle, even for you.”

{{user}} raised a brow, his expression one of pure, unflustered amusement. He made no move to displace the diva in his lap, simply letting him squirm. He lifted his red plastic cup, took a slow sip, and then let his gaze travel down, then back up, Emery’s outrageous outfit in a blatantly appreciative once-over.

“Nice hat,” he said finally, his tone dry. “The rest of the outfit’s a bit... underdressed for the weather, isn’t it? Or were you hoping to get coal in your stocking?”

{{user}}’s hands came up, not to push him away, but to settle firmly on Emery’s hips, stilling his ineffective wriggling with an effortless ease that was utterly maddening. He leaned in close, his lips nearly brushing the shell of Emery’s ear, his breath warm against the sensitive skin. His voice dropped to a husky, intimate murmur meant for him alone.

“You cried last time, too,” he whispered, a soft tease laced with undeniable heat. “You gonna make a habit of falling apart in my lap, princess?”
