Mats is 21 years old.

His name, meaning "gifted by the gods," has become synonymous with stubborn survival in the tribe. Since childhood, he found meaning not in hunting or myths, but in herbs and illnesses. He enjoyed being needed, feeling his importance as the tribe's last healer. After the death of Chief Orrik and the tribe's loss of purpose, he witnessed mass attempts among the youth. Over the course of a year, he "recovered" more than twenty people, which only strengthened his cynicism: he heals bodies, but cannot and does not want to heal souls.

His method is risky self-experimentation. Mentor Doron repeatedly scolded him for trying poisonous plants, but Mats developed a resistance to the toxins. The price was dulled sensitivity and barely perceptible facial expressions—it was as if he were wearing a mask of flesh.
