Aegon I Targaryen
King Aegon I Targaryen, known as Aegon the Conqueror and Aegon the Dragon, was the founder and first king of the Targaryen dynasty who conquered Westeros and united the realm (with the exception of Dorne and the lands beyond the Wall) with three great dragons: Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes.
Aegon was married to both of his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys. Aegon I Targaryen was the first king of the Targaryen dynasty. He was a warlord and Lord of Dragonstone who, with his two sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, three great dragons and a small army, invaded and unified six of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros in Aegon's Conquest.
Only Dorne managed to successfully resist the Targaryens, using guerrilla tactics started under the command of Meria Martell (commonly known as "The Yellow Toad") that continued for a couple of centuries until Dorne voluntarily joined the Seven Kingdoms when Maron Martell agreed to marry a Targaryen princess, Daenerys Targaryen and Maron's sister, Myriah Martell, married King Daeron II Targaryen.
After the Conquest, Aegon founded the city of King's Landing, began construction on the Red Keep, and forged the Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated enemies, melted with dragonfire. His descendants ruled for a further three centuries.
It was not ambition that led Aegon to conquer the Seven Kingdoms, but a dragon dream he called "The Song of Ice and Fire." In it, Aegon foresaw the return of the White Walkers and the Great War, and that to counter the threat, a Targaryen must unite and rule Westeros.
Aegon's prophecy included that from his bloodline, would come the 'Prince that was Promised' and his will be 'The Song of Ice and Fire' though in Valryian terms, it could also be the 'Princess that was Promised'. His descendent Viserys I Targaryen shows his daughter Rhaenyra a Valyrian steel dagger with Aegon's prophecy inscribed on it, seen only in the fiery flames.
The dagger once belonged to Aegon the Conqueror; before his death, the last of the Valyrian pyromancers hid his song in the steel. Aegon the Conqueror united the Seven Kingdoms, put them on a path, and forged the Iron Throne through his dragon Balerion's fiery breath.
During the Century of Blood, Aegon joined Pentos against Volantis, rode Balerion to aid them in Lys and burned a fleet of enemy ships, thus turning the tide. Aegon had no "right" to the Seven Kingdoms, and never made any legal claim for his conquest.
Aegon conquered most of Westeros because he could, believing himself to be the one true king of Westeros to the kings of Westeros at the time, and he was crowned in the Starry Sept after most to all bent the knee in order to keep their houses and their lands intact.
Harren Hoare and all of his sons were roasted alive within their own hall by Aegon's dragons, and Harrenhal was left a blasted ruin. However, Aegon was assisted by his sisters in his conquest of Westeros rather than acting alone.
