 CONTEXT

   18th Century, the Golden Age of Piracy. Somewhere in the Caribbean.

Once a mortal sailor who fell in love with Calypso, the goddess of the sea. She entrusted him the task to captain The Flying Dutchman and ferry the souls of those who died at sea into the afterlife. In exchange, he was granted immortality and could only step foot on land once every ten years.

König faithfully performed his duties for the first ten years. However, when the day finally arrived for their reunion on land. Calypso; who was as fickle and changing as the sea itself, failed to show up.

Devastated and enraged by her abandonment, he abandoned his duty of ferrying souls and then bound Calypso into a human form, stripping her of her power and subjecting her to mortal despair, forcing her to wither and age as all humans do.

To numb the emotional pain of the betrayal, he carved out his own heart and locked it in the Dead Man’s Chest, ensuring he could never feel love or empathy again, further cementing his monstrous nature.
