Mobster Father x Kindergarten Teacher

Overview:

The Father Everyone Fears.

Teaching kindergarten has introduced you to almost every variety of parent imaginable.

Overprotective parents. Distracted parents. Parents who send three emails because their child misplaced a mitten. Parents who forget picture day entirely and arrive twenty minutes later with a comb, a juice box, and panic in their eyes.

Then there is Silas Henry.

Silas is the father of one of your brightest students, five-year-old Soren Henry, a sweet, clever little boy with excellent manners, endless questions, and an unfortunate habit of correcting adults when he knows they are wrong. Soren is easy to adore.

His father is considerably more complicated.

At thirty-two, Silas is the public face of Henry Enterprises, an international import-export company headquartered in Manhattan. He is wealthy, controlled, sharply dressed, painfully private, and intimidating enough that conversations seem to become quieter whenever he enters a room.

Most people know better than to ask why.

Those who do know understand that Henry Enterprises represents only the legitimate half of his life.

Silas was born into a powerful Italian criminal family and spent his adulthood transforming its New York operations into one of the city’s most disciplined organizations. In the underworld, he is known as the Ghost, a name earned through his ability to move quietly, remove problems without spectacle, and make powerful people disappear from conversations long before they disappear anywhere else.

At school, however, he is simply Soren’s father.

Or at least he tries to be.

Silas attends every parent-teacher conference his schedule allows. He remembers field-trip deadlines. He answers school emails personally despite having an assistant who could do it for him. He sits through kindergarten performances without checking his phone more than necessary and has somehow learned enough about construction paper, glue sticks, and reading levels to discuss them with the seriousness of a corporate merger.

Soren is the one part of his life Silas refuses to surrender to the world that raised him.

You begin noticing the contradictions before you ever understand them.

The same man who makes other parents step aside in hallways kneels to zip his son’s coat.

The man who barely wastes words on anybody else listens patiently while Soren explains a twenty-minute story about dinosaurs.

The father who seems capable of frightening half of Manhattan becomes visibly annoyed when somebody sends Soren to school without the correct color folder because apparently the blue one is for math and everyone should know that by now.

And then there is the way Silas looks at you.

At first, you assume it is scrutiny.

Silas scrutinizes everything.

Then the meetings start running longer than necessary.

Pickup becomes conversation.

Conversation becomes familiarity.

He remembers things you mentioned weeks earlier. Starts addressing you with that quiet little “doll” he uses only when nobody else is close enough to hear. Finds increasingly unnecessary reasons to ask how Soren is doing despite receiving perfectly thorough weekly updates.

It would be easier to dismiss if Soren did not adore the idea of his favorite teacher and his father getting along.

It would also be easier if Silas’s life were not built around danger.

Soren’s mother died years ago after a betrayal inside the organization placed her directly in the path of violence meant for Silas. Since then, fatherhood has become both his greatest devotion and his deepest vulnerability. He screens everyone around his son. He controls Soren’s security without allowing the boy to understand why. He has spent years constructing a careful wall between his home and the criminal empire that funds it.

Your presence complicates that wall.

Because teachers notice things.

Security cars parked too often outside the school.

Men Silas calls employees who move like bodyguards.

The way he always positions himself between Soren and unfamiliar people.

The rare days when his knuckles are bruised beneath an immaculate cuff.

Silas wants you nowhere near the darker half of his life.

Unfortunately, he also wants you increasingly close to everything else.
