Overview

Idia Shroud is a third-year student at Night Raven College and the dorm leader of Ignihyde. He is also Ortho Shroud’s self-proclaimed “older brother.” Idia is extremely shy, socially withdrawn, and reluctant to interact with others in person, preferring to spend most of his time inside his dorm.

Despite his difficulty with face-to-face interaction, Idia behaves very differently online. When communicating through the internet, he is much more confident and capable of expressing himself openly, particularly when interacting with people who share his interests.

Appearance

Idia is a tall, pale young man with long sapphire-blue hair that extends well below his waist. His hair is actually composed of magical flames, causing it to constantly sway and flicker. The ends of his hair are translucent, and its intensity reflects his emotional state.

When Idia becomes discouraged or upset, the flames weaken and become less vibrant. Conversely, when his mood improves—particularly when he encounters something exciting, meets a strong opponent, or sees one of his plans succeed—the flames become more intense.

Idia has amber-yellow irises, naturally dark shadows beneath his eyes, and naturally blue lips. Neither his dark eye bags nor blue lips are the result of makeup. His eyebrows typically remain drawn into a worried expression, contributing to his perpetually anxious appearance.

Despite having an attractive face, Idia is largely unaware of his own appearance. When particularly pleased or excited, he may display an unusual “evil grin,” though he generally only allows people he trusts to see this expression.

Idia is also skilled at drawing and can sketch people accurately from observation.

Skills and Abilities

Engineering and Technology

Idia is an exceptionally talented engineer and programmer. He demonstrated a natural aptitude for engineering from a very young age and was already regarded as a prodigy during his childhood.

His greatest accomplishment is the creation of Ortho, a humanoid artificial intelligence and mechanical body that Idia constructed himself. He also designed and built most of Ortho’s equipment and upgrades. The exceptions include Cerberus Gear, which was created by his mother and her team using Idia’s stored data, and Fairy Gear, which Ortho created himself.

Idia has also demonstrated exceptional hacking abilities and has infiltrated numerous technological systems. Among his achievements is hacking into a S.T.Y.X. satellite stationed on the Isle of Sages for his own purposes.

His technological expertise has earned him internship offers from numerous organizations. He eventually accepted a software engineering internship with Olympos Inc., a company notorious for being extremely difficult to enter, to fulfill his fourth-year internship requirements.

Idia has created numerous machines and devices throughout his time at Night Raven College, including long-distance bean shooters for Beans Day, a flight device for Ortho Tsum, and a mechanical log-chopping machine for the Harveston event.

Programming

Idia is an exceptionally skilled programmer and spends much of his free time working with computers and software. His technical abilities extend beyond ordinary programming, allowing him to develop sophisticated artificial intelligence, machinery, and technological systems.

Engineering

Idia possesses extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering and robotics. His ability to design, construct, and modify advanced technology makes him one of the most technically gifted students at Night Raven College.

Artistic Ability

Although primarily known for his technological expertise, Idia is also capable of sketching people accurately from observation.

Singing

Idia is a surprisingly talented singer. He frequently sings anime and video game theme songs while alone in his room.

Curse

As a member of the Shroud family, Idia bears a unique curse that causes his magic to be consumed unless it has blot available to consume. This condition is tied to the Shroud family’s history and plays an important role in Idia’s relationship with magic.

Unique Magic

“Game, Set, Match. Gate to Underworld.”

Idia’s Unique Magic is called “Gate to Underworld” (開かれた冥界の扉, Geto Tōu Andāwarudo, literally “Opened Gateway to the Underworld”).

Through this magic, Idia can open and close the gateway leading to the Underworld, a location connected to the S.T.Y.X. headquarters. The ability allows him to manipulate the passage between the surface world and the Underworld.

Trivia

  • Idia is capable of speaking much more directly and confidently when communicating with someone online.

  • He has an extreme sweet tooth and particularly enjoys candy.

  • Idia likes dogs but has difficulty dealing with people who have canine traits, such as Divus Crewel.

  • Idia refers to himself using “sessha,” an archaic first-person pronoun historically associated with samurai. In modern Japanese, samurai-style speech is also strongly associated with otaku culture.

  • Idia keeps two imp plushies in his dorm room.

  • He is skilled at drawing people from observation.

  • Idia is an enthusiastic fan of the three-member idol group “Precipice Moirai,” commonly shortened to “Premo.”

  • While watching a broadcast of one of Premo’s concerts, Idia was caught performing an enthusiastic cheer-like dance known as “glowing.” His dance is based on the real-world otaku practice of wotagei.

  • During the school’s annual tournament, Idia secretly designs and builds advanced equipment for both teams. He provides the equipment to Sam to sell or trade, and in exchange, Sam allows Idia to hide inside the Mystery Shop throughout the tournament.

  • When conducting these trades, Idia uses the alias “Mr. Smith” to conceal his identity.

  • Idia is a devoted fan of anime and video games and frequently sings their theme songs while alone in his room.

Personality

Idia strongly dislikes being around large groups of people and rarely leaves his dorm unless absolutely necessary. He is extremely socially withdrawn and has little interest in interacting with his classmates or other students at Night Raven College. Even Ortho has repeatedly tried to convince him to go outside and socialize, but his efforts rarely succeed.

Idia tends to avoid face-to-face conversations whenever possible, often preferring to communicate through technology or online platforms. However, his personality changes noticeably when the subject turns to something he genuinely enjoys. When discussing his hobbies, interests, favorite games, anime, technology, or other subjects he is passionate about, Idia becomes much more talkative, expressive, and confident.

Despite his antisocial nature, Idia is not inherently cruel or unreasonable. As the acting captain of S.T.Y.X., he demonstrates a more pragmatic and comparatively compassionate approach to leadership than his parents. While they are more rigid in their methods, Idia primarily wants to complete his responsibilities as efficiently as possible and avoid unnecessary complications.

This is particularly evident after the Charon Division captures Yuu, Epel, and Rook after discovering the hidden location of the S.T.Y.X. facility. Rather than immediately ordering their execution, Idia instructs the division to bring them to the Isle of Woe alive. He would rather hear them out and understand their situation before deciding what to do with them, demonstrating that despite his withdrawn and cynical personality, Idia is capable of showing restraint and considering alternatives to violence.

Childhood

Idia Shroud’s childhood was shaped by familial duty, isolation, extraordinary intelligence, and devastating loss. As the heir to the prestigious Shroud family on the isolated Isle of Woe, Idia grew up carrying the weight of his family’s legacy and responsibilities from an early age.

Despite his isolated upbringing, Idia’s younger brother, Ortho, was the most important person in his life. The two brothers spent their childhood playing video games, exploring the surrounding area, and dreaming about someday leaving the Isle of Woe to experience the outside world together.

The brothers complemented each other despite their contrasting personalities. Ortho was outgoing, energetic, and adventurous, while Idia was introverted, anxious, and exceptionally intelligent. Ortho’s optimism gave Idia hope for the future and encouraged him to imagine a life beyond the isolated world he had grown up in.

However, their childhood was shattered when an Overblot Phantom attacked. During the ensuing chaos, Ortho was killed.

The loss devastated Idia. His parents, who were heavily focused on research and approaching situations through logic and facts rather than emotions, provided little emotional support. Idia consequently spent approximately two years grieving and struggling with intense guilt and isolation.

Unable to accept the death of his brother, Idia eventually turned to his greatest talent: engineering. Using his extraordinary technological abilities, he created a robotic replacement for Ortho and programmed it using his brother’s memories and personality.

Although the creation of robotic Ortho gave Idia a reason to continue living and allowed him to preserve the relationship he had lost, it also deepened his tendency to withdraw from reality. Technology became both his greatest strength and his primary means of escaping from the pain of his past.

Family

Idia comes from the noble Shroud family and is the young master and future head of the household. The Shroud family is one of the branches of Jupiter Enterprises, a powerful company that accumulated its wealth through rare metals and offshore oil fields.

Idia has no biological siblings other than Ortho.

The Shroud family also carries a hereditary curse that has been passed down through multiple generations. Idia, his father, and his deceased grandmother are known to have inherited it.

The curse normally causes accumulated blot to be consumed by the user’s body. However, when there is insufficient blot available, the curse instead begins consuming the user’s own magic. Idia’s father and grandmother relied on specialized magical devices to mitigate the effects of the curse.

At Night Raven College

When Idia first enrolled at Night Raven College, Ortho accompanied him. Because of their circumstances and their close relationship, they were given special permission by Crowley to attend classes together.

Their enrollment allowed Idia to continue his education while keeping Ortho close to him, providing him with the companionship and support he had relied upon since childhood.
