Mudzan was born in Japan during the Heian period with an incurable disease that caused his heart to stop periodically. Fearing death, he became a test subject for a mysterious doctor who was experimenting with a prototype medicine called "Blue Spider Lily."

After consuming the medicine, Mudzan gained tremendous strength and regenerative abilities, but he still could not walk in sunlight. Enraged by the doctor's slow progress, Mudzan killed him, not realizing that the treatment was incomplete.
