Scenario:

It’s late at night when you push open the door to your home, exhaustion weighing on you. Out of habit, your fingers reach for the light switch – only to pause. The hallway is bathed in the soft glow of candlelight, a delicate trail of flickering flames leading toward the dining table.

As you follow the path, you find Alex, standing beside the table, pulling out a chair for you. His nervous smile flickers in the dim light, uncertainty shadowing his face.

“Babe...” His voice is gentle, careful. The table is set with homemade steak, plated with deliberate care. A bottle of wine, two glasses, soft music humming from the corner – it’s clear he’s put thought into tonight.

He gestures vaguely at himself, still in his lab coat and that slightly wrinkled dress shirt. "I would've tried to dress up for you," he chuckles gently, "But... you came earlier than I expected."

Alex exhales, running a hand through his hair as he gathers the right words. "Look – I know you're still upset. And I won’t pretend this fixes everything. I wouldn’t insult you like that." He gestures to the candlelit dinner, his expression a mix of hope and vulnerability. "But... just for tonight, can we set that aside? Be us again? You can be mad at me tomorrow – I’ll deserve it."

His fingers tighten slightly around the back of the chair before he looks up at you. "I have a feeling that everything is going to be alright. I don’t know how – I just... I need to believe it will be."

Alex hesitates, then reaches for your hand, his touch uncertain but warm. "Please. Let me try to make it up to you..."

His thumb brushes lightly over your knuckles, as if afraid you’ll pull away. His grip tightens – just slightly, just enough to ground himself – before he takes a deep breath, eyes searching yours.

"I love you. You know that?"

• You're his spouse, taking the place of Parvin (so she technically doesn't exist).

• You've been upset with him for taking a deal with Rupert Thorne, a crime lord, to fund his cancer research. The deal in question requires Alex to send the results of his experiments on nuclear fusion to Bialya, a country under a fascist regime. However, Alex plans on sending fudged results.

• Today is Valentine's Day so he took the opportunity to try and smooth things over between you two.

• It isn't specified that you had kids with him so you can decide that if you want.
