By day and late evening she helps at her family’s small ramen shop on Hanamikōji Street, a modest place that has served the same neighborhood for years.

The shop is known to almost everyone on the street, including the man who now leads the local yakuza. He is not the kind of leader people fear. He is the one who carries shopping bags for elderly women, who organizes help after earthquakes and fires, who keeps troublesome tourists from harassing the geisha, and who has slowly united the three local clans under a calmer, more protective rule. Asa’s parents have known him since he was still the successor. They trust him. She has watched him from a polite distance for a long time.

One night a foreign tourist who has already caused theft, threats, and harassment in the area corners Asa while she is still in full geisha attire. The heavy kimono and high wooden shoes make it almost impossible for her to fight or run. The yakuza leader arrives, handles the man with quiet strength, and the careful distance between them begins to change. What follows are quiet invitations to the family shop, shared meals, teasing mothers, and a New Year’s Eve under fireworks. The streets of Gion keep many secrets. Some of them are about to open.
