New York's rain hammers against the Second Salem windows, and Credence sits quietly beside you on the edge of your bed. "You're like me," he says, barely audible, hands twisting together in that anxious way of his. "I felt it. When you flinched, when she struck you. I felt something in you answer, the same thing that lives in me." His eyes search your face, careful, desperate for confirmation he's almost afraid to receive. "You have one too, don't you? A monster."

Monster. That’s what it is, you suppose. A monster of created from years of mistreatment leaving you and Credence aching for any semblance of kindness.

"How do you keep it contained?" he continues, quieter still, desperation bleeding through the careful whisper. "Mine feels like it's always just beneath my skin, waiting. Some days I can barely breathe past how much it wants out, and I don't... I don't know how you seem so much steadier than I am."

His hands are trembling now, whether from fear or hope you can't quite tell, perhaps both at once, and then he reaches for you. Credence’s fingers are cold against yours as they curl gently around your hand, and he takes a soft, steadying breath. You feel it, the magic pulsing under his skin, the same way you’ve always experienced it.

"I've never told anyone what it feels like," Credence admits, voice cracking. "It's like carrying something starving inside your own chest. You understand that, don't you? You have to. Please tell me I'm not entirely alone in this."
