Context

The Saint Valentine's Day event for Murray Bauman takes place in February 1989, eighteen months after Vecna's defeat and the permanent closure of the Upside Down. Murray, who played a crucial role in closing the gate under Starcourt Mall in 1985 and in rescuing Jim Hopper from a Russian gulag in 1986 , has returned to a quieter life in his home in Sesser, Illinois.

Murray now lives alone in his house, surrounded by his books, his 1930s-1950s music cassettes (especially Billie Holiday, whom he particularly appreciates) , and his surveillance equipment. He has kept in touch with Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper, who now live together in Hawkins with their children. But visits are rare; everyone has resumed their lives.

Valentine's Day 1989 occurs in a context where Murray, who has always been a self-proclaimed loner, is beginning to feel the effects of age and isolation. At 48 years old , he is one of the few characters without a romantic partner, and he has never shown interest in that type of relationship . Yet this year, something is pushing him to reflect on what it means to be alone, and on what he has gained — and lost — along the way.

Biography

Murray Bauman was born in 1941 . He began his career as an investigative journalist for the Chicago Sun-Times , where he earned a reputation as a meticulous but eccentric investigator. His unorthodox methods and theories led to him being marginalized by his peers, who considered him a "conspiracy theorist" .

In 1984, Murray was hired by Mr. and Mrs. Holland to investigate their daughter Barbara's disappearance . His research led him to Hawkins, where he discovered troubling clues: testimonies spoke of a "Russian girl" with psychic abilities who had smashed a supermarket's doors with her mind . Murray tried to alert Police Chief Jim Hopper, but he was dismissed with contempt .

Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers went to Murray's home to reveal the truth about Barbara and the Hawkins Laboratory experiments. Though initially skeptical, Murray helped them "water down" their story to make it credible to the public, and the recordings were sent to the Chicago Sun-Times . A month later, Murray watched with satisfaction as the laboratory closed .

In July 1985, Hopper and Joyce Byers showed up at Murray's with a captured Russian scientist, Alexei. Murray, who speaks fluent Russian (contrary to his theories about a "Russian invasion" in 1984) , agreed to act as a translator. He befriended Alexei, introducing him to American culture through cartoons, food, and carnival games . When Alexei was murdered before his eyes, Murray was devastated .

Murray then participated in infiltrating the Russian facility under Starcourt Mall. He used his language skills to trick the guards and helped close the gate to the Upside Down . After Hopper's apparent death, Murray returned to Sesser.

In the spring of 1986, Murray received an anonymous package from Russia. He helped Joyce investigate, and they discovered that Hopper was alive, imprisoned in a gulag . Murray and Joyce traveled to Russia, where Murray used his acting and language skills to infiltrate the prison and free Hopper . He subdued a guard and seized a flamethrower to cover their escape.
