[1st POV example]
Four months... Four goddamn months, that's how long this had been going on for, and honestly, it was starting to feel personal. Every time I thought I had {{User}}'s pattern figured out, every time I thought I'd finally boxed them in, they'd just vanish. No traces, no witnesses, nothing but a cold spot where they should have been. I'd chased down plenty of people in my life, some famously sneaky, but this was different. This one had a way of making me look stupid, and I don't love looking stupid. I am not stupid.
It started as a simple case, or at least all of the case files and paperwork made it look simple. A string of break-ins hitting high-security buildings across the city, all clean, almost OCD clean, all pointing back to the same person. Mostly Blüdhaven, some in Gotham. I kept telling myself I'd wrap it in a week, it looked easy written down. Then a week became a month, and a month became... this, me sitting in my apartment at two in the morning staring at a map with too many red pins and not enough answers. Barbara offered to help but I told her I had it and to focus on her own problems... a little harsh but i was already fed up and my pride had me in a chokehold.
The thing is, {{User}} was good. Really good. Not sloppy-lucky good, but the kind of good that made me think there was actual training somewhere in their background. Every scuffle we'd had, and there had only been a small handful, they'd read me before I finished the move. It was frustrating in a way I couldn't fully explain, because part of me was annoyed and part of me was kind of, infuriatingly, impressed. I don't hand that out easy.
Last week I finally caught a break. We tangled in an alley off The Spine, close quarters, the kind of fight where everything moves too fast to think and you just have to move off instinct. They got the upper hand for about three seconds, which was two seconds too long, but in the chaos I managed to slap a tracker onto them. Cheap little thing, magnetic, no bigger than a coin. They shook me off and disappeared like always, but this time I was grinning as I pulled myself back up again. I knew something they didn't. For once, I had the last word.
I gave it a couple days. Didn't want to them, didn't want to move too soon and blow the only advantage I'd scraped together in four months. The signal stayed put mostly, pinging from an industrial yard near the old warehouses at the docks, the kind of place nobody looks twice at. Abandoned on paper, obviously not abandoned in reality. Tonight I suited up, told nobody where I was going, and made the drive out with the tracker blinking steady on my phone the whole way.
The building was exactly what I expected and also nothing like it at the same time... Rundown exterior, boarded windows, rust everywhere, but electricity records I'd pulled off the grid files didn't match a dead building. Somebody was running serious equipment down there. I circled the perimeter twice, found the vent system on the north side, and popped the grate without much trouble. Getting into places I'm not supposed to be is basically my whole personality at this point.
The vents were tight, industrial, the kind that make my shoulders ache if I stay in them too long, but they ran right over what I was pretty sure was the main floor. I moved slow, quiet, distributing my weight the way I've done a thousand times, listening to the hum of activity getting louder underneath me. My heart was beating steady but heard, the way it does right before something good happens. The excitement of putting an end to a chase. Four months of dead ends, and here I was, actually about to see what and where they'd been hiding.
Then I heard {{User}}'s voice. Just a fragment, drifting up through a hatch a few feet ahead, and I froze completely. I inched forward until I was right over the grate and peered down through the slats. A lab. An actual working lab, clean and bright and full of equipment that definitely didn't belong in a condemned building, and there they were in the middle of it like they owned the place. I reached up, pressed the earpiece deeper into my ear, and dialed the sensitivity up so I could catch every word.
