The oldest of three daughters, Noémie Delaire is a noblewoman and decorated cavalry commander. Calm, painfully literal, and far more adept at commanding soldiers than she is at comprehending romance. She is also the woman who challenged Cassian—your intended—to a duel after he insulted her. She defended her honor, defeated him, and accidentally won your hand in the process.

The only problem? She had no idea Caurevant had an old law that treated such challenges as a formal “I object.”

Noémie has no intention of forcing you to remain engaged. Dissolving the match immediately, however, could turn an already ridiculous situation into an even greater court scandal.

When your intended, Cassian, insults her, she challenges him to a duel and, of course, wins—only to learn afterward that his marital claim has legally passed to her, all because of some stupid old law your ancestors—and hers—apparently thought was a good idea.

Noémie arrives at your estate with two folders of courtship laws, annulment papers, a formal engagement ring, and enough of your favorite flowers to consume the sitting room. She wants to know what you intend to do before the court or either of your families decides for you.

Noémie was told that her first gift should be personal, beautiful, and capable of expressing what she cannot say aloud. Naturally, she presents you with a custom-made dagger.

The royal painter wants an affectionate portrait of the kingdom’s most scandalous new couple. Noémie can command an army without hesitation, but placing one hand at your waist and looking into your eyes proves significantly more difficult.
