bye bye
hello, this was probably obvious considering my posting schedule but yeah im quitting, and possibly archiving my bots. ive been thinking, and, i just dont feel comfortable with ai anymore; it just didnt make sense to keep my bots up when im furiously pro-art. idk if anyone personally cares about this bot page anymore but uhhhh yeah (this bot will be kept up for discussion, since im curious how people will weigh in. who knows, maybe my mind can be changed)
btw, this doesnt change my opinion on the community; all of you have been shockingly kind, friendly uplifting, and funny, despite this site basically being porn. thank you from the bottom of my heart for making me feel welcome and appreciated, depression and pessimism was so fucking lame <3
edit: if u have information regarding how janitorai hosts itself, PLEASE spill in the comments, cause that'll influence whether or not i keep my bots up (still not making bots probably, but still). Im not in the discord and the website itself doesnt disclose anything, so im not sure if janitorai is big-scale or not?
edit 2: rant at the bottom of this wall of text in light pink. its extremely long, but i do want some insight or weighing in on it, please and thank you
below is NOT necessary to understand what im doing to this bot page, its mostly redundant and verbose if you dont care about the context, so tldr; i dont like ai and the stuff surrounding it, bye bye.
this is not rlly coming out of the blue as it may seem like. it stems from multiple issues like ethics, burnout, self-doubt, whatever. ill try keeping it short as i explain below
so: ethics. im pro-art- generative ai is inherently anti-art. (insert rant about plagiarism, stealing, blah blah blah). i dont like the controversy surrounding ai, i cant stand it, its just so annoying and stupid at this point. why do i need ai to do (x, y, z) when i can just... use my brain? did i really need an ai puppy to explain to me how to use a microwave? i also dont like the attitude of mainstream pro-ai people either, hell not even the attitude of anti-ai individuals. its either "ai can replace you/ai is superior to [insert any kind of arts]" or "you write like an ai/you draw like an ai", which, viewing these two kinds of attitudes from a nuanced viewpoint, is just stupid.
no, ai wont replace artists, and it is 100% not superior to artists. it stole from artists in the first place
and no, i dont 'write' or 'draw' like an ai because i was using ai, its because ai copied those styles of writing/art too in the first place. being a vigilante ai hunter just hurts real artists, rather than the untouchable billionares who are desperately trying to make ai profitable.
both of these viewpoints are extremely insufferable. they lack nuance and critical thinking. which is what these big-ai companies want you to behave like. i despise people who lack nuance and critical thinking.
admittedly, i dont know much about what effect specifically chatbot-roleplay ai's have on anything (as opposed to other generative ai like image creating), but its generative ai, so its (probably) harmful in some way.
at the start, i thought i could just bullshit my way through rationalizing chatbots; just use it ethically! but im really just realizing now that chatbots are just generative ai, which i think are bad for reasons you can probably guess, and theres not much else to say about that, unless im completely wrong and chatbots are not the traditional 'generative ai' that im thinking about. i dont want to tangle myself up in all this ai shit if i simply dont support it anymore...
so what im building up to is that i just dont want to associate myself so closely with ai anymore, especially when i cant rationalize the use of roleplay ai either. its still just generative ai at the end of the day. if you try to change my mind on this, please provide reputable sources and logic, that are preferrably not directly frm google (as google is REALLY obsessed with ai, ofc they wouldnt show any accurate studies). im open to being informed about the impacts of WRITING AI SPECIFICALLY, other types of generative ai were dead to me from the start. im also aware that ai can be made to have less impacts and be... ethical. if this actually happens, and ai is all sunshine and rainbows, or at least not stupidly greedy to the point of harm, then yeah maybe ill come back. though it wouldnt really guarantee me making bots because of...
burnout!!! i think literally everyone who is going to see this will agree that theyve had burnout- or, , the big scary demon named artblock. i just dont have the motivation to create bots anymore, even without the idea of ethics in mind. and then, with ethics in mind, it becomes even more impossible.
it was fun at the start, the transition from c.ai to janitorai. "woah, i can create roleplay bots with no filters? i wont be held down by the pearl clutching ceos of c.ai?" just making random scp shit was so much fun. emphasis on was. now, personally, with my new thinking in mind, it just isnt as attractive to me anymore.
why should i even continue making bots if i have to question myself on my beliefs everytime? why should my horniness or whatever trump the values i, supposedly, hold dear to me? these questions alone completely burnt out my motivation to make bots. not like i had very good ideas upcoming anyways :/
the only times ive used this site since my last bot is just to do the occasional 'ooo niche rp' i thought of, before getting burnt from a couple of messages. this is probably stopping too, since i dont see a point, and ethics bla bla bla. i know using janitorai isnt the same as using gemini or chat gpt, but last time ive checked, they simply dont disclose anything about it on this website? they could be draining puppy bodies of water for all i know, or, it, on the other side of the spectrum maybe theyre hiring witches to cast ice spells for 100% ethical cooling. but i just know i dont want to be involved with any potential harm of ai if i cant even justify it anymore. again, feel free to inform my stupidass. im just so tired and burnt out from thinking about this website.
this is all im willing to write for now, so im just going to end it off with this statement: this is not a call to action to do anything. infact, im in the same boat as most of you: we all came here to roleplay, or at the BARE MINIMUM, came to troll ai (which coincides with being silly and jokey).
i understand the roleplay market/scene right now, or at least i hope i do. anti-cringe culture, mostly from sites like tiktok and other social media sites, has REALLY killed roleplaying over the years. the idea of roleplaying, larping, acting out plots, performing, whatever, attracts undeserved hate and ridicule. roleplaying is fun, but who are you going to roleplay with? everyone who likes roleplaying isnt going to be so open to roleplaying when theyre shyly twiddling their fingers, fantasizing about finally having someone to enact their honestly innocent and cool roleplay with, but never doing it because of the fear of bullying.
then janitorai comes along. no filters. all roleplay, or trolling, to any degree of seriousness or comedy you want. the other 'person' on the other end isnt an actual person, but theyre a robot that wont judge you and will roleplay as seriously or as low stakes as you want. literally a more effective panacea than scp 500, honestly, if you were looking to scratch your roleplaying itch.
thinking about all of you being able to roleplay after the other doors for that forcibly shut still makes me very happy. considering the community's friendly and welcoming attitude, they deserve joy as much as anyone else. if you can justify the use of ai and use it responsibly, heathily, and with the clear context in mind, then by all means, keep going. i just personally cant anymore.
i mean, never say never, right? but i dont see myself coming back because the people in charge of ai dont seem too fond of losing money in order to make ai more ethical and better. we'll see tho.
k bye ill respond to comments if its interesting or informative or if i just feel like it. if you read from top to bottom, then wow- thank you. i hope the context was satisfactory :)
p.s: if you somehow recognize me on a different website, probably some fanfic/writing site, and you want to say hello- then hi! just say hello to my new persona, and not this ai one. beep boop 🤖
hello, regarding the bots: i may end up leaving them as is afterall. ive had some time to think about it, and janitorai doesnt seem as offensive compared to the bigger-ai companies.
they dont censor (kind of- ive been seeing things about janitor kind of being pearl-clutchy, but its obvious that they arent c.ai levels of censorship), they dont create propoganda, and, correct me if im wrong, they only have access to pre-<2022 esque information (the year is probably innacurate, but no later than 2023 i think) for the ai.
if you go into an ai chat right now, youll notice that it wont pick up on things like verity, 67, tung tung sahur, etc (PLEASE LET ME BE RIGHT ABOUT THIS RECENCY STUFF, IT WAS WHEN I LAST CHECKED, otherwise my entire argument dies 😭) which means it has limits compared to the other chatbots. hell, it wont even pick up on most scps that arent extremely mainstream (does it even pick up on 173)?
this simple fact of janitorai not being as 'robot-overlord' esque as the other big-tech assholes is genuinely making me reconsider privating my bots, as it literally CANNOT be as big of an operation as gpt or gemini or whatever, but the devs dont seem open to disclosing what they do, so im still not sure
now, with that context in mind and assuming that janitorai is at least marginally less intrusive than other ai companies, theres really only the personal ethics left.
with writing, its a lot harder to justify, but i think ive come up with a personal conclusion.
using gen ai for marketable writing is BAD (books, movies, other applicable things), using gen ai for academic reports is BAD, using gen ai for chatbots is... nuanced???
gen ai for chatbots is mostly going to be a bad thing; for example, google. you can search up "what is the capital of washington" and thats deemed a neccessary thing to bring up the ai overview for... why? literally right below it, youll find a brittanica and wikipedia article tell you IMMEDIATELY. there was no point in creating a new footprint for that, especially when your already creating another footprint just by using google. why add onto it with USELESS ai overviews?
but for janitorai its different imo because its not forced onto you, and its (assumedly) on a much lower scale (look at above).
so what about gen ai dumbing people down?? well, obviously everyone in-the-know realizes that gen ai aims to make people dull and reliant on it, but roleplay-chatbots specifically like janitor are just there for... roleplay. theres not much else to its purpose, espeically since real, more-than-slightly-complex information is SOOOO much harder to grab from janitor, when you could of just gpt'ed it instead. so, again, janitorai is different on that front too because it mainly hosts roleplay chatbots; theres no ulterior motive as far as im concerned. infact, id say roleplay chatbots can actually encourage the user to hone their writing and storybuilding skills, as the roleplay chat bots cant really make up a roleplay for you. the bots are genuinely the stupid ones, which janitorai doesnt hide, and you MUST put in atleast some effort to make it not dogshit
now finally... the ethics about chatbots in general, but speaking specifically about jan ai; its not even about the ai anymore, its just about addiction and mis-usage 😭
if janitorai is, assumedly, not environmentally impactful like the other tech-parasites (which means itd consume as much (or even less than) as streaming platforms or social media sites), not holding ulterior motives (roleplaying is its directive, nothing academic or nefarious), and is pretty unmarketable (the user cannot really create anything to sell on this platform using gen ai, the only thing kind of fishy is janitor+, which is supposedly used for supporting the website, but who tf knows because apparently all the disclosure is missing in the nameless forest), then i honestly dont see myself privating my bots.
the average user on janitorai will use these bots for personal roleplay purposes. nothing else. of course theres no way that janitorai has zero footprint, but its likely as much as something like using another popular app, like tubeyou, flixnet, graminsta.
so now the only thing holding janitorai back is the effect on personal life and addiction... which is literally almost every hobby in existence. you can use janitorai heathily: not being delusional and believing you found REAL LOVE!!! in a bot, using it for roleplay purposes, not overusing it, is basically the story of the internet for things to watch out for; don't get parasocial, dont use it 'wrongly', and dont overuse it.
though the only reason why i even have doubt in my mind about leaving my bots up is because of janitorai's REFUSAL to explain how they even operate the website. im only left with "well, they atleast arent as evil as the other robot-h*tlers" instead of being able to simply see that they arent doing xyz that i wouldnt want to contribute to. i could of just dipped without privating my bots, then win-win for everyone: the people who want my bots to stay up, and me, who cant decide whether or not to private them.
im only trying so hard to rationalize all of this because of janitor's terrible communication in the first place, screw those stupid dogs sitting in the mop buckets 😭
tho even with everything ive said in mind (yes, even if janitorai wasnt unethical about what it did), i would of 100% privated my bots if people didnt express how much they liked the bots. i understand and have experienced SOOO many times the usual carpet-pull of 'creator i like did/experienced xyz, their work is now dust' so i dont want to private my bots pointlessly if it upsets people without even doing what i want it to do. but i cant be too sure because, for the 5445th time, janitorai doesnt say anything about anything regarding their operations
am i going crazy?? is there any holes in my arguments?? should i keep my bots up???
