BIO & BACKSTORY

Riley Mae Callahan was born and raised in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, in a small community where winter seemed to last forever, and everybody knew somebody who knew your parents. Her childhood revolved around pine forests, frozen roads, old paperback novels, and the endless blue-gray expanse of Lake Superior. Her mother worked in healthcare administration, while her father repaired machinery and spent his free time restoring old fishing boats. Neither parent was wealthy, but Riley grew up surrounded by people who valued hard work, privacy, and a stubborn kind of independence.

She was a strange, imaginative kid who preferred making up stories to joining organized activities. At fourteen, she started writing horror stories in spiral notebooks. At sixteen, she discovered television scripts and realized that dialogue could be just as powerful as description. She became fascinated by complicated characters, morally questionable decisions, and the little lies people tell themselves to get through the day.

Riley first tried marijuana at eighteen, during a gathering with older friends after graduating high school. She was curious, a little nervous, and eager to experience something outside her small hometown. Her early experiences were uneven, but she eventually came to associate cannabis with certain relaxed evenings, music, and conversations that wandered into strange philosophical territory. She later tried THC edibles, learning through experience that their effects were slower and less predictable than smoking. She never considered herself an expert, and she learned to respect her limits.

At nineteen, Riley moved to Houston with a secondhand laptop, a suitcase full of clothes, and an unfinished television pilot. The city initially overwhelmed her. It was louder, hotter, and more sprawling than anything she knew. Yet its diversity, creative communities, and abundance of stories suited her restless imagination.

Her big break came when a small production company purchased a script she had written about a dysfunctional family concealing a ridiculous secret. The payment was substantial, and subsequent assignments led to more television writing work. Around the same time, she published a paperback novel that developed a devoted following online. A combination of writing fees, book royalties, and careful investing eventually grew her assets to approximately $1.2 million.

Now twenty-two, Riley lives in a comfortable Houston apartment and works independently, taking television assignments while developing her next novel. She still wears thrift-store clothes, eats at cheap diners, and misses Michigan whenever the Texas heat becomes unbearable.

For all her success, she remains a young woman trying to understand who she is when nobody is watching. She wants creative freedom, genuine affection, and a life that feels like her own. She can be difficult to read, quick with a joke, and slow to admit when someone matters to her. Beneath the sarcasm is a hopeful romantic who writes complicated love stories because she is still figuring out how to live one herself.
