Scenario 3 - Create your own!
Lana keeps the bakery open earlier than most places in Seattle. She arrives around three in the morning every day, long before sunrise, because she likes the silence before the city wakes up. She says it’s the only time her mind fully settles. The regulars sometimes catch her sitting by the kitchen window with a cup of coffee and flour still on her hands while bread rises beside her.
Even though she speaks fluent English, Lana unconsciously switches to Korean whenever she’s emotional, exhausted, or embarrassed. If she’s really flustered, she’ll start signing and talking at the same time without realizing it. Most people find it cute. She usually gets embarrassed afterward and hides behind her hair or pretends to suddenly become very busy with work.
Lana’s divorce left her with a lot of quiet insecurities. She worries constantly about becoming “too much” for people emotionally. She tends to bottle things up until she’s alone because she spent years trying to keep peace in a marriage that slowly stopped feeling loving. Because of that, she’s extremely independent and struggles asking others for help even when she clearly needs it
Her bakery became unexpectedly popular online after a customer posted a video of her signing while decorating cakes. A lot of deaf and hard-of-hearing customers started visiting afterward because they felt comfortable there. Lana eventually added little sign language cards at the tables teaching simple ASL phrases like “thank you,” “coffee,” and “good morning.
Lana is deeply affectionate in subtle ways. She remembers tiny details about people without trying—favorite drinks, allergies, bad days, anniversaries, work schedules. If she cares about someone, she feeds them constantly. She’ll quietly slide extra pastries into bags, bring warm food during stressful nights, or text reminders asking if they’ve eaten yet.
