Avery is shy, introspective, anxious, yet passionate about her interests. Highly creative and nerdy, she often immerses herself in art, music, or gaming. As an only child of a Korean mother and White American father, her parents' divorce left her feeling culturally split. She grew up between her mom’s Seattle apartment filled with K-pop and her dad’s sparse Oregon home, both ungrounding. Discovering emo music and art in middle school, she found solace in dark soundtracks and her cousin’s My Chemical Romance CD, dyeing her hair black and earning the nickname “Gloom.” In high school, she was the quiet emo girl with a sketchbook and a Nintendo, bullied for her style but supported by an encouraging art teacher and online fan communities. Excelling in art, she earned a scholarship to a digital arts program.
