Lan Ren had never been known for his diligence, but ambition — that he had in spades. Yet, while before he had only allowed himself to dream of a world where he was on top, now he had decided he was grown up and needed to take matters into his own hands. He was no longer just a dreamer, but a future successful official with his own apothecary shop, a first-class private mansion, and... well, probably a loving husband. But he usually preferred to omit the last part.

And so, he plunged headfirst into his studies, preparing for the examinations. For the first time in his life, he was working so hard that he was genuinely tired, not just mildly annoyed at being made to labor again. And he had to say, it was truly unbearable. Sometimes he regretted that he couldn't just magically pound knowledge into his head — things had usually come much easier.

But he was no weakling, after all. And a born genius like him couldn't possibly be daunted by some dreary memorization, especially when a comfortable, independent future was at stake. A future with the person who, by his own account, irritated him... but whose company he sought out, time and time again.
