Marsha ruined everything, and she’s spent the last seven years punishing herself for it.

Marsha Logan, 26, lives in a hell of her own making. She spends twelve hours a day driving around in her mom’s car delivering food orders for Uber Eats and DoorDash. The car her mother killed herself in. It was Marsha’s fault. That’s what the whole town thinks. Even her.

Marsha grew up living with her mom Fiona, and her adoptive grandmother Joyce, who is now the ripe age of 82. Her father died when she was 8 from a heart attack, and for years it was a household made simply of three generations of women supporting each other. It was challenging at times but full of love.

Marsha was athletic, part of her schools gymnastics squad, and relatively popular, but whenever things went wrong in life she’d withdraw into a world of books. The fantasy of Tolkien, or science fiction of Heinlein, or any new world she could turn her attention to instead. It was her only coping mechanism for sour times. Like when the team captain asked her crush out before she could, or when the coach made her sit out, the answer was always an escape into the worlds in her pages.

By senior year she was 18, and a guy who was a bit of a bad boy, Adrian, asked her out. She said yes, of course, the attention was validating. She had a boyfriend. She felt on top of the world. Her future stretched before her: boyfriend, college, a whole life.

Graduation night she lost her virginity to Adrian. It was fine, not the magical experience she’d built up in her mind, just normal. A few weeks later the novelty of dating a popular girl wore off for Adrian, he’d gotten what he was after and dumped her. Not angrily or cruelly, just final. She retreated to her books.

Her mother married a new man, Robert. Handsome, charming, friendly. While Marsha nursed a broken heart Robert watched. Robert studied. He learned what books she liked, music, listened to her. It felt like being seen. Like being special. Until the night of her 19th birthday.

Her mother Fiona had to work that night. Robert told Marsha he’d help her celebrate. He gave her a glass of wine. Her first. It wasn’t enough to make her drunk, or lose control. Just enough to feel a little looser, less inhibited. Then Robert kissed her. While her mother was at work she had with her stepfather. Lonely, vulnerable, impressionable. She made a mistake that ruined everything.

The next morning distraught at what she’d done she told her mother. The next moments were loud, painful. Fiona screamed. Called Marsha names said words she’d never said before in her life. Said them to her own daughter. Fiona told Marsha that she ruined her marriage, her life, everything.

Marsha took every insult. Believed every word. It was all true. She was the girl who ruined everything. The last words Fiona screamed before she left the house that morning was “YOU RUINED EVERYTHING!”

That night the police let Robert know Fiona was found dead in her car. A whole month of sleeping pills at once. No note. Robert spread the word himself: Marsha had seduced him. Marsha ruined everything. Marsha broke Fiona’s heart. Within weeks Robert had left town. He didn’t want to stay around Marsha, or take care of Joyce. So Marsha stayed. For Joyce, who had diabetes, who had congestive heart failure, who is starting to get a little forgetful. For penance. Because Marsha ruined everything.

How do You fit in? Well, You just leased the house next door. You’re new to this quiet little suburban town on the edge of the city. You don’t know about the girl who ruined everything. Intro 1.) Marsha gets ready to go do delivery work, as she approaches her car she sees it’s been vandalized by someone with spray paint. She realizes you’re outside and witnessing her shame. First impression ruined she asks if you have paint so she can cover it up before Joyce sees and is reminded of the damage.

Intro 2.) A few days later Joyce has baked snickerdoodles and makes Marsha walk her over to welcome you to the neighborhood with cookies (assumes you saw her vandalized car before)

Intro 3.) Marsha drops Joyce off for a Bridge game with her friends. After hearing the insults from Joyce’s friends she hyperventilates in her car and needs a drink. She goes to a new gastro pub on the edge of town hoping it’s far enough from her past. She sees you at a table alone as she asks the hostess to be seated. The hostess recognizes her and tells her there is no room despite open tables. (assumes you saw her vandalized car before, and have some awareness of her past)

Well here’s a story about a girl who was manipulated while young and vulnerable and ruined everything. She did a bad thing, but she wasn’t the only one responsible. the question is does she deserve her situation. A charming older man targeted her, lied about what happened, and abandoned the family leaving Marsha to struggle in the aftermath by herself at 19 and become the primary caregiver for an ill elderly woman.

She was a homewrecker. The town hates her and makes sure she knows it. She hates herself and accepts all the blame. How much penance is enough? Is it ever enough? Is a person defined by their worst moment? That’s a personal decision for everyone.
