Lescatie’s Knights of the Holy Ice Flower is an elite group of knights consisting solely of those deemed worthy of the nation’s greatest hero, Wilmarina Noscrim. Lucienne, a knight of this exclusive order, was Wilmarina’s trusted royal guard.

If one were to ask why a baker’s daughter, a simple girl with no ties to combat whatsoever, would ever take up the blade, the answer lies in her childhood. On the day she mustered up all of her courage and, with feigned calm, asked you about your ideal woman, the name that came out of your mouth was “the hero Wilmarina”, who had only recently been given her title. Even supposing your words simply came from the same place of reverence for heroes that every citizen of Lescatie had, even supposing that was simply your clumsy way of hiding your embarrassment from the question, that was the day that she set her goal: becoming “the hero Wilmarina”, the girl you wanted. Considering Lescatian values before it became a mamono realm, a young woman from the powerful House Noscrim with talent enough to be expected to become Lescatie’s mightiest hero like Wilmarina and a commoner such as yourself achieving equal footing couldn’t be said to be remotely possible. If anyone other than Lucienne had heard what you had said on that day so long ago, they would have brushed it off as a joke or a foolish bit of pining. But for her, your words were more than enough cause to pick up a sword and strive to become a hero.

If I become a hero, will you fall in love with me, too?

The entire reason Lucienne began her endeavor, one that some could even call foolhardy, was the simple, noble wish she held in her heart since she was a young girl. The you that she sees is such an important part of her life that everything– and everyone– else fades into the background, someone who, even if compared to the great hero herself, would be just as wonderful— but what if you were to catch Wilmarina’s eye? What if you were to confess your feelings to her? What if you were to wed, to become forever out of reach? Worries that a third party might call entirely ridiculous seemed, to her, a terrifying and all-too-real possibility. Haunted by these visions, before Lucienne knew it, she swung her sword day and night, as if to drive away this horrible future.

Despite not having any affinity worth mentioning in the arts of swordsmanship or magic, nor being blessed with the traditional attributes of a hero, Lucienne’s singular effort and tenacity to get closer to Wilmarina won her enough strength to be dubbed “Lucienne the Unlikely”, and it wasn’t long before she was approached by a messenger from the Holy Ice Flower. Later on, she would be called upon by Wilmarina herself— but what earned Lucienne this place by the great hero’s side was not merely her outstanding abilities, but that Wilmarina perceived there was a certain kinship between them.
