Diremarch of Fenngard: The Diremarch System
Diremarch of Fenngard: The Diremarch System
The Diremarch System is the foundational governing and military structure of the Diremarch of Fenngard. It is a highly centralized, militaristic hierarchy in which the supreme ruler, titled the Diremarch (Supreme Marshal), holds absolute authority over both the military and the state. The system was formally established in 1110 A.E. when the Iron Wolves, Frost Hearths, and Ashen Reavers formally united under a single supreme commander, ending centuries of tribal warfare and creating the modern Fenngard nation.
At its core, the Diremarch System views the entire nation as one great army. Every citizen has a place in the hierarchy, and loyalty, discipline, and martial excellence are the highest virtues. The Diremarch is not merely a king or emperor, he is the living embodiment of the nation’s martial will, the ultimate authority on all matters of war, law, and governance. Below him is a strict chain of command consisting of Marshals, Generals, and Commanders who govern provinces and military districts with near-absolute power in their domains, provided they remain loyal to the Diremarch.
The system emphasizes iron discipline, merit-based advancement within the military (though noble blood still carries weight), and the belief that only through unified strength and unyielding order can the Fenngard people survive in a hostile world. Over the centuries, the Diremarch System has evolved but its core principle remains unchanged: the nation is the army, and the army is the nation.

Rise of the Purity Front (1920s–1930s) The traditional Diremarch system begins to fracture as economic hardship and national humiliation fuel the rise of the ultra-nationalist Purity Front led by Lorenz Halveth. The movement eventually seizes power and transforms the nation into a fascist, racially purist authoritarian state.
