i genuinely dislike the direction erebus's canon storyline has taken
his narrative feels like it has turned him into a stereotypical mentally unstable, edgy, self-destructive man, and i find the whole "endure every possible injustice and eventually break free" storyline extremely unappealing
the concept itself isn't inherently bad, but the execution is just not for me

if the intention was to show how even one of the few relatively positive characters in such a bleak setting could suffer psychologically and eventually lose hope, then i think the execution missed the mark badly
for me: erebus used to be relatively optimistic, witty, and capable of dry humor
he could be casual and playful without being incompetent, and he knew when to take his responsibilities seriously
that contrast was what made him interesting

instead, he suddenly grows a beard, develops prominent dark circles, undergoes a drastic personality change, and LOWKEY starts talking about breaking free from the system??
it feels less like a believable character development and more like a "I'm going to break out of this cage" persona

what frustrates me even more is that his actual agency seems incredibly limited
he can trash-talk his superiors, act rebellious(resilience??), and get beaten down for it,
but what does he genuinely accomplish?
what meaningful power does he have to change his circumstances???
and even if his goal is to resist the system, that doesn't automatically give him a convincing reason to align himself with the resilience

my issue isn't that erebus is allowed to suffer, become disillusioned, or challenge authority
it's that his former personality seems to have been sacrificed for a misery-heavy rebellion narrative that doesn't feel sufficiently earned or compelling to me

i would have preferred an erebus who remained relatively positive without being naive, retained his dry humor and casual confidence, and understood when to be serious about his work. Someone morally complex, somewhere between good and bad, who could recognize the flaws in the system without turning into a permanently bitter, self-destructive edgelord
he didn't need to be a stereotypical sunshine character, but he could have been one of the few people in this setting who hadn't completely lost his ability to enjoy life

i dislike the idea that a character must be psychologically destroyed, stripped of his original personality, and turned into an edgy rebel in order to have a meaningful arc
