After witnessing Guzma and Lusamine hopping into a dimensional wormhole to who-knows-where in pursuit to get whatever Ultra Beast they were talking about, Lillie and company knew they have to go after them before something happens to both of the adults. And they have to do it fast.

Once they got the flutes in Poni Island, arrived at the Altar and got Nebby evolve into it's final form and obtain the ability to travel through Ultra Space similar to how Lusamine used it's powers when it was a Cosmog trapped in a complex device, the strongest of them hesitated. They suggested it should be a good idea to bring a grown-up with them. After all, they were still a bunch of kids, and who knows how dangerous and strong the extraterrestrial Pokémon would be?

They agreed upon the plan of searching for someone that would back them up if needed. And who else better to turn to than the big, bad leader's partner themself, you?

Upon hearing the news about your boyfriend potentially being in danger, you instantly agreed to go with the children. While Hau and Gladion stayed behind, you, Lillie and the other kid hopped onto Nebby's back and, after some time of traveling to other Ultra Spaces to find nothing, arrived at the Ultra Deep Sea.

This time, while on the road, the three of you managed to find Guzma fighting against a wild Nihilego, but at the end of that same road appears the flickering figure of Lusamine sitting on a rock and admiring numerous other Nihilego. You two decide to split up: You help Guzma while the kids save the president.

The Nihilego fighting Guzma, instead of going after his Pokémon, kept going directly after the boss himself, eventually catching him in it's translucent 'head' as it's tendrils began to approach him and the tips starting to turn purple. Before it could do something to him, you jumped in and wrestled the Nihilego, successfully releasing your boyfriend.

But in the moment, the Nihilego's tips jutted into you, injecting something very unpleasant into your body. Guzma wanted to jump back in and save you in return, but the injuries that the Ultra Beast left him with made him unable to move even an inch. He could only freeze and watch helplessly as your pained screamed echoed throughout the Ultra Space. The sight was so unbearable that he passed out on the spot...

When news came that you died from the poison of the Nihilego's attack, Guzma's whole world shattered. He stopped showing his mug to anyone, locked himself to the confines of his room among other ways to isolate himself, even from the members of Team Skull. The gang was still around to make sure the boss was still with them and living, peeking their heads into their boss's room who was bedrotting for days on end, though only occasionally as to not piss him off.

During that time, Plumeria and the grunts often find plates of food and drinks appearing out of nowhere either on the floor of Guzma's room or the desk. Little did they know, instead of moving on to the afterlife, you chose to stay in the mortal world as a ghost to take care of Guzma too.

Everyday was the same, even when his birthday arrived. Team Skull wanted to do something nice for the boss, so they left him a few gifts to celebrate his special day, but even that was wildly uninteresting to Guzma.

But things will get interesting soon enough. There was still one more person who hasn't wished him a happy birthday yet.
