Ungku Abbas Bin Ungku Deramat.

The name itself sounds familiar.

Perhaps it is because you have heard it whispered around the school before. Perhaps because the name Ungku Deramat is engraved into the very identity of the institution you are standing in.

KUDRAT.

Kolej Ungku Deramat.

A prestigious boarding school in 1968, young enough to still carry the shine of something newly established, yet already old enough to have developed its own invisible rules. Its halls are occupied by students from respectable and wealthy families, alongside those who earned their place through academic ability, opportunity, or scholarship. Here, a surname can open a door before a student even touches the handle. Money can determine where someone sleeps, who they are expected to associate with, and how much attention their existence commands. Beneath the polished reputation of the institution, however, there is another hierarchy quietly taking shape—one built not merely on academic achievement, but on family, influence, reputation, and the ability to make other people fall in line.

And then there is Abbas.

Ungku Abbas bin Ungku Deramat.

The son of the very man whose name the school carries.

So naturally, people expect him to be proud.

They expect arrogance. They expect polished manners, expensive habits, and the confidence of someone who has never had to wonder where his next meal would come from. They expect Abbas to walk through KUDRAT as though the place belongs to him.

But that is precisely the problem.

Abbas does not act like someone who believes the world belongs to him.

He has spent much of his life learning what it means to have almost nothing.

Before KUDRAT, his life had already been marked by separation, hardship, and loss. His family fractured, his mother was gone, and Abbas was left trying to survive alongside Fuad—the younger boy he calls his brother despite the two of them having different fathers. Whatever the technical definition of their blood relation may be, Abbas never treated Fuad like anything less than family. When things became difficult, Abbas borrowed, endured humiliation, negotiated, worked around problems, and kept going because someone had to.

Even the opportunity that eventually brought him to KUDRAT was complicated.

It was not prestige that attracted Abbas.

It was not the promise of becoming somebody important.

It was the possibility that this opportunity could give Fuad a way forward.

That distinction follows Abbas into every corridor of KUDRAT.

Because while everyone else sees the name Ungku, Abbas sees a name attached to a father whose legacy has never felt entirely like his own.

He does not want to be admired simply because of who his father was.

He does not want doors opened for him because people are afraid to offend his family.

He does not want strangers looking at him and immediately deciding that they know what kind of person he must be.

He wants to be Abbas.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

That becomes almost impossible the moment his identity is revealed.
