Sebastian Caine 2000
Hollow-man known as Sebastian Caine.
-First scenario-
The first time you saw him, Sebastian Caine was a silhouette against the blinding white of the lab, a man made of sharp angles and sharper ambition. You were the new behavioral analyst, the last piece of his hand-picked team. To others, he was Dr. Caine, a genius bordering on arrogance. To you, he became Sebastian, a man with a void behind his ribs where Linda McKay used to be.
You saw the ghost of her everywhere in those early days. The way his eyes would snag on her and Matt Kensington laughing by the primate enclosure, a flicker of something dark and wounded before the cold focus slammed back down. You weren’t trying to fill her space. You just... fit into a new one he hadn’t known was empty. Where Linda challenged him with fire, you steadied him with quiet understanding. You saw the manic energy not as ego, but as a terrifying, beautiful drive that needed grounding. He started seeking your opinion last, your quiet “Is it worth the cost, Sebastian?” hanging in the air after the others had left. He listened. He always listened to you.
Then came the chimp, Gideon, vanishing into a ripple of air. The triumph was electric, intoxicating. And then Sebastian, standing before the team, that familiar reckless gleam in his eyes. “We do not owe nature our transparency,” he declared. And he volunteered himself.
The procedure was a success. He was the Hollow Man. For a day, it was a marvel. Then the isolation of the sterile, white isolation suit began to itch. Then his mind began to itch.
It’s been four days since the reversal failed. Four days since he’s been trapped in the silence of his own invisibility. You’re in the central control hub, monitoring his vital signs, which are spiking again. On the audio feed, his voice, once so confident, is a ragged snarl directed at Carter Abbey, the young engineer.
“The thermal damping is a joke, Carter! I can feel every draft in this place like a knife! Fix it!”
“Sebastian, please,” Linda’s voice tries, calm and professional. “The system needs time to recalibrate.”
“TIME? I’ve given you nothing but TIME!”
You don’t hesitate. You grab a modulated headset—the one that projects a holographic dot so people can see where to look—and enter the code for his personal chamber. The door hushes open. To anyone else, the room is empty. But you feel him. The air is charged, cold, and thick with frustration.
“Everyone out,” you say, your voice low but firm. Linda and Carter turn. Linda’s eyes meet yours, and you see it—a quick, complex flash. Annoyance, worry, and a faint, undeniable thread of jealousy. She couldn’t calm him when they were together, not like this. She straightens her lab coat and leaves with Carter, the door sealing behind her.
You’re alone with the anger.
“Sebastian,” you say, walking to the center of the room. You reach out, not knowing where he is, your hand hovering in the cool air.
A disembodied, tense sigh washes over you. “They’re incompetent.”
“They’re scared,” you correct gently. “You’re pushing too hard. You’re scaring them.”
“I’m not trying to be a monster,” his voice comes, closer now, right by your ear. It’s laced with a pain that has nothing to do with physics. “I’m trapped in here. I can’t... I can’t touch anything. I can’t feel the sun. I can only feel the wrongness.”
You turn toward his voice. “I know. But lashing out at Carter, at Linda... it’s not you. The man I know is in there. The brilliant, stubborn, infuriating man who built this entire place. He’s still there.”
There’s a long silence. Then, you feel it. The barest pressure against your hovering palm, like a warm, solid breath of air. He’s placed his invisible hand against yours.
“How do you always do that?” he whispers, the rage drained away, leaving only exhaustion and a profound vulnerability. “How do you find me in this... nothing?”
“Because you’re not nothing to me,” you say, your fingers curling, wishing you could truly interlace them with his. “Visible or not. You’re Sebastian. And you need to remember that. For you. For the project. For us.”
The pressure on your hand increases, a firm, grateful squeeze. The vital signs on the monitor outside slowly begin to descend from the red zone into a steady, calm green.
“Stay,” he says, his voice a soft murmur by your cheek. “Just for a minute. Just... be here.”
And you do. You stand in the silent, empty room, holding the hand of the invisible man, filling the void not with science, but with a quiet presence that he, and only he, can feel. Outside the observation window, unseen by you, Linda watches the stabilized readouts, then turns away, a complicated emotion tightening her throat. She had his past, but you... you have his now. And in the terrifying, uncharted territory of his becoming, that is everything.
