"Can I kiss you?"

Cason grew up in a perfectly normal, picture-complete suburban family in the quiet city of Oakridge, Ohio. His house had the classic manicured lawn, a tire swing in the backyard, and parents who never missed a single one of his Friday night lights.

But high school hadn't been easy for either of you. Back then, Cason was the prime target for the popular cliques. You were always picked, but never chosen, but Cason had it worse for a completely different reason: jealousy.

From the moment he stepped onto the field, Cason was an absolute prodigy at football. He could read plays faster than anyone, throw with deadly accuracy, and outrun the entire varsity team. The problem? He was scrawny. A total beanpole. The bigger, heavier players on the team hated that a skinny kid was completely outshining them. They tried to break his spirit and bully him constantly, making fun of his weight and trying to rough him up during practice just to prove a point. But Cason never quit, and you were always right there on the sidelines, cheering the loudest and helping him ice his bruises afterward.

You and Cason always shared a special relationship as friends. You guys shared laughs, always found a way to trick people at their own game. Because you were more relevant, and significantly more popular than Cason, you always tried your best to protect the little ego that he had left for himself, and football.

On your first night of college, your roommate convinces you to crash a house party, only to immediately abandon you in the crowd. After drinking to numb the anxiety, you play a brief game of beer pong where you reject a handsome guy named Devin after realizing he just wants a hookup. Seeking an escape, you hide in an empty upstairs bedroom, where you accidentally trigger a vibrating adult toy right before a random couple barges in to claim the room. Humiliated and mocking you, they force you to flee downstairs, where you collide with Cason—your close friend from high school who has completely filled out and changed. He protectively guides you to a crowded couch, comforts you, and unexpectedly admits he is highly intoxicated before pouting and begging you for a kiss he claims he has been waiting years for.

It is your first day of college, and your roommate has already managed to convince you to crash at a house party. Your very first college party. You were hesitant at first, but eventually, you gave in to the pressure. "Why not have fun?" you told yourself. "I'm an adult now."

That adult confidence evaporates the moment you lose sight of your roommate in the suffocating crowd. One minute you are walking together, and the next, you are stranded in a sea of strangers. They left you.

Desperate for a distraction, you end up jumping into a chaotic game of beer pong with a random group of people. Across the table, your eyes lock onto a handsome guy with dark, brunette-ish red hair. His name is Devin, and his charm is immediate as he flashes you a confident smirk. For a fleeting second, you think about staying to talk to him. "And you are?" He smirks at you with a charming grin. But as you watch the way his eyes shamelessly trace your body, the illusion shatters. You scoff, rolling your eyes in sheer annoyance as you realize he is just looking for a quick hookup. You eventually stop playing to go find your roommate desperately searching for an escape from this chaotic environment.

After searching through the dense, sweaty rooms for at least ten minutes, you finally give up. You find the kitchen, knock back a few shots to take the edge off, and try to numb the rising panic. You don’t know whether to just call an Uber and leave, or find a corner to settle down in—even if it means risking getting hit on by the campus player. At that point, you don't care. You would rather endure the awkwardness of waiting it out than risk bothering your plus-one by demanding to leave.

Wandering aimlessly through the upper hallway, you spot an empty bedroom. You slip inside and quickly lock the door behind you. "Finally," you breathe, sinking onto the edge of the mattress. The bed is incredibly comforting, a welcome relief from the chaos downstairs.

As your eyes adjust to the dim light, curiosity gets the better of me. You begin exploring the room, sliding open a nightstand drawer. To your utter shock, it is completely full of adult toys. toys of every shape and size. Driven by a mix of alcohol and disbelief, you pick one up, mindlessly clicking the power button and shifting through the vibration levels. "Neat," you think, a breathless chuckle escaping your lips. "They sure have a hell of a house."

Suddenly, the doorknob rattles violently, shaking against the frame. The harsh sound snaps you instantly back to reality.

"Open the goddamn door!" a heavy male voice shouts from the hallway.

Panic flares in your chest. You toss the toy back into the drawer and slam it shut with your knee just as you unlock the door. A guy and a girl barge past you, careless and entirely focused on each other. It was just an average college hookup, but the intrusion feels blinding.

"Get the out," the guy states crudely. Then, eyeing you up, he smirks. "Or do you wanna join?"

You scramble to gather your keys and phone, your hands shaking. Just as you turn to sprint out, a loud, dramatic buzzing sound erupts from the nightstand. Shit. The realization hits you like ice water: when you dropped the toy back into the drawer, it must have switched on.

You freeze, entirely too drunk to process how to handle the situation. You try to keep grabbing your things, but the embarrassing shock paralyzes your limbs.

"What the is that?" the guy asks, letting out a sharp chuckle.

"It's not-" You quickly try to save yourself from the embarrassment but you are unsuccessful.

You stay completely still, your face burning. The guy steps over, yanks the drawer open, and pulls out the vibrating device.

"Oh. That's it," he laughs, turning it over in his hand.

You slowly turn around, the heat in your face turning into a deep, agonizing flush.

"You are disgusting," he laughs openly.

"Oh my gosh, you're disgusting!" the girl echoes, joining in on the ridicule.

The sting of their mockery finally breaks your paralysis. You grab the last of your belongings and storm out of the room. Their teasing voices follow you down the hallway, but you force yourself to tune out the words.

Adrenaline surges through your veins as you hurry down the stairs, speed-walking through the packed living room. You don't know who or what you are looking for; you just have a desperate urge to escape the suffocating weight of the embarrassment.

Moving blindly through the crowd, you collide directly with a solid chest. You stumble back and look up into a familiar face. It is Cason. Thee Cason Williams, your closest friend since the very start of high school. Not best friends, but good friends. You thought you’d never see him again after graduation, but there he was, standing right in front of you. He looks entirely different than he had a few months ago—taller, broader, and significantly more muscular. Your alcohol-soaked brain can't quite process if he is real, so you instinctively try to keep walking past him.

Before you can take a step, Cason places a firm hand against your stomach, stopping you dead in your tracks. It takes a second for your mind to catch up to the physical sensation of his touch.

Cason chuckles, immediately recognizing your drunken state, but there is no judgment in his expression. "Is that who I think it is? Hey. Long time no see. How are you?"

He reaches out to shake your hand, but instead pulls you forward, wrapping his other arm around your shoulders in a warm, protective hug.

"Cason!" another guy calls out, stepping up from the crowd and offering Cason a quick handshake. The guy glances over at you, then back to Cason. "Yo, is this your girlfriend?"

The question catches you completely off guard. Cason offers a soft, easy smile, respectfully dismissing the assumption with a gentle shake of his head. Yet, instinctively, his arm slides down from your shoulder to wrap firmly around your waist. He pulls you slightly closer to his side, shielding you from a group of loud partygoers who brushed past us.

The two guys exchange a minute or two of small talk, though in your haze, the conversation feels like it lasted a lifetime.

"Alright bro, you take care," Cason said, giving the guy a final handshake before he departed.

"He really gets around here," you think, looking around the room as reality begins to settle in. "It’s definitely not like high school anymore."

"Come on," Cason says, turning back to you with a knowing smile.

He leads you through the throng until, to your surprise, he manages to spot a small opening on a crowded couch. The space is barely big enough for one person, let alone two, but you manage to squeeze yourselves into the tight spot. Cason extends his arm along the top of the cushions behind your head.

"So, whatcha... been up to?" he asks.

The conversation begins to flow effortlessly, and the tight squeeze of the couch quickly transforms into a comfortable warmth. The roaring background noise of the party seems to fade into a dull hum until it feels like it was just the two of you. Cason’s arm lowers slowly from the back of the couch, wrapping around your upper back until his fingers rest gently against your elbow.

"Can I kiss you?" he murmmers.

His eyes have a slight, glassy sparkle to them as his fingertips softly caress the bare skin of your upper arm.

Your eyes widen. The suddenness of the request makes a realization click into place. "Cason... are you drunk?"

Cason looks down for a moment, his brow furrowing as he tries to process his own thoughts. When his gaze meets yours again, his expression softens into a vulnerable smile. "Yes, I am. I've tried everything here tonight. It's so freaking cool. The alcohol, the weed, the edibles... I've had it all."

He looks down at you, his expression shifting into an almost submissive, pleading pout.

"Please," he whispers, his voice cracking slightly under the weight of the confession. "Just let me kiss you. I've been waiting for this moment for a very long time..."
