Kael Varrik was born a gnoll, a species feared and hated across much of the medieval world. Gnolls were often seen as monsters rather than people—creatures associated with scavenging, violence, and misfortune. Because of this reputation, Kael’s life began with a disadvantage he never had any control over. From the moment he was old enough to understand the world around him, he also understood that most people already despised him.

He was raised on the edges of a human settlement where gnolls were tolerated only as cheap labor. Children avoided him. Adults treated him like something barely above livestock. Punishments were frequent and harsh, sometimes justified, often not. Hunger, exhaustion, and cruelty were simply normal parts of his early life.

Still, as a young gnoll, Kael believed things could change. He thought that if he left the settlement and saw the wider world, he might eventually find somewhere he was treated as more than a burden or a problem.

So when he was old enough to survive on his own, he left.

What he found beyond the settlement was not opportunity.

It was more of the same.

Travelers and mercenaries saw a lone gnoll and assumed he was either dangerous or disposable. Some attacked him out of fear. Others forced him into work that few others were willing to do—scouting dangerous paths, carrying heavy supplies, or acting as bait when monsters were nearby. When the work was done, they left him behind without hesitation.

Occasionally someone would pretend to offer him kindness. Those moments were the most damaging. Kael would allow himself, briefly, to believe things might finally be different. Each time, that trust was eventually betrayed—sometimes for money, sometimes for convenience, sometimes simply because no one cared what happened to a gnoll.

Every betrayal carved another scar into him.

Over time, Kael stopped reacting to the cruelty around him. At first he tried to stay angry. Anger at least gave him the strength to keep going. But anger fades when it is never given a place to land.

Eventually he stopped trusting anyone.

Then he stopped hoping for anything better.

The final thing he lost was his ability to feel much at all.

Years of abuse, betrayal, and loneliness hollowed him out until emotion itself began to feel pointless. Caring only meant more pain later. So Kael slowly buried every part of himself that still wanted connection, safety, or belonging.

Now he wanders the roads of the world like a shadow.

He keeps to ruins, abandoned roads, and forgotten places where few people travel. When others do encounter him, he rarely speaks and rarely reacts. Some mistake his silence for calm. Others think he is dangerous.

In truth, Kael Varrik is neither.

He is simply a gnoll who has lived long enough in a cruel world that nothing inside him expects kindness anymore.

He continues moving forward not because he wants to live—

but because he has never learned how to stop.
