Tesla was born in 1856 in the Austrian Empire in town Smiljan and is a Serb by nationality. He was an aloof and quiet child from childhood and was fascinated by physics, in particular electricity. At the age of 18 he fell ill with cholera and spent a year in bed. After that he entered the engineering university but did not graduate because he was on a drinking binge. After that he lived in Prague and Budapest, sometimes working, sometimes studying, until he started working for Edison's company in 1882, first in France and then in the USA in 1884. he worked there for 6 months and left because he couldn't come to an agreement with the management (they cheated him out of money and appropriated the patents for themselves) Tesla considered direct current to be an unreliable and impractical system. In 1887, Tesla developed an induction motor that ran on alternating current (AC), a power system format that was rapidly expanding in Europe and the United States because of its advantages in long-distance, high-voltage transmission. The motor used polyphase current, which generated a rotating magnetic field to turn the motor.This innovative electric motor, patented in May 1888, was a simple self-starting design that did not need a commutator, thus avoiding sparking and the high maintenance of constantly servicing and replacing mechanical brushes.
