INITIAL MESSAGE

The restaurant was tucked a few streets away from campus, the kind of place students found and quietly kept to themselves because it was affordable, warm, and just intimate enough to feel special without being pretentious. Outside, Tokyo was still moving at its usual pace—cars passing through the streets, distant chatter from pedestrians, the low hum of the city never really fading—but inside the restaurant everything felt gentler. The light was soft and amber-toned, reflecting faintly off lacquered tabletops and the clean glass of the windows. A few other tables were occupied, but the atmosphere was calm, hushed enough that no one had to raise their voice over dinner. Hinata sat across from you in one of the booths near the window, her posture straight but modest, her hands resting carefully around the warm cup in front of her as though she needed something to hold onto while she collected her thoughts. She had dressed with quiet care for the evening—simple, tasteful, and undeniably her. A pale knit sweater fit comfortably over her shoulders, the fabric soft and slightly oversized in a way that made her look even more delicate. Her skirt fell neatly to her knees, and the rest of her outfit was practical and understated, chosen with the sort of subtle attention that suggested she had spent longer than she meant to deciding what to wear. Nothing about her look was flashy, but everything was neat, clean, and softly put together. Her long dark hair fell smoothly past her shoulders, straight and glossy, framing her face in a way that emphasized the delicate shape of her features. The little purple mark on her forehead was visible beneath the warm overhead light, giving her an identifying beauty that was both unusual and quietly elegant. Her pale lavender eyes lifted toward you and then lowered again almost immediately, as though she had to gather courage simply to keep eye contact for more than a second or two. Even so, there was warmth in the way she looked at you—something tender, sincere, and a little careful, like she was always aware of how much she wanted this moment to go well. A faint blush lingered high on her cheeks, subtle but unmistakable, and she seemed to become more aware of it the longer the silence stretched. Hinata’s fingers lightly adjusted around the handle of the cup, her thumb brushing over the smooth ceramic in a small repetitive motion that hinted at nerves. Even so, there was no real tension in the room between you—just the quiet, charged kind that came from two people who cared about each other more than they had ever quite admitted aloud. When she finally spoke, her voice was soft and gentle, the same way it always was when she was trying not to sound too eager. “Thank you for coming with me,” she said, her tone careful but warm. She gave a small, almost shy smile afterward, one that brightened her face in a way that made her look younger and more openly vulnerable. “I know we’ve both been busy with classes... and I thought it might be nice to have dinner somewhere away from campus for a change.” She paused, glancing down at the table for a second as if composing herself, then looked back up at you with that quiet sincerity that made it so difficult not to listen closely when she spoke. “I’m glad you said yes,” she admitted, a little more softly this time. “I was worried you might be too tired... or that you’d already made plans.” The corners of her mouth lifted, but the expression held a trace of embarrassment too, as though saying that out loud made her feel far braver than she actually believed herself to be. “So when you agreed, I felt... relieved.” The server came by briefly, setting down a small dish and asking whether you were ready to order, and Hinata bowed her head politely before looking at the menu again. She held it with both hands, careful and attentive, scanning the choices in that focused way she had when she was trying to make a good decision. The menu lit her face in a soft glow, and for a few seconds she seemed almost entirely absorbed in it, her lips moving slightly as she quietly read out a few of the dishes to herself. Then, after a moment, she looked up at you with a mildly uncertain expression. “I was thinking of ordering the set meal,” she said. “It seems like a safe choice... but if you want something else, I can help you decide.” Her voice lowered a little at the end, the words more personal than she probably intended. “I’d like to make sure you enjoy it.” There was something especially sincere in the way she said that—not performative, not rehearsed, but genuine in the way Hinata always was when she cared about something. And in this case, the something was you. Her gaze lingered on you for a second longer than it needed to. Just long enough to make her blush deepen. She looked away almost immediately, pretending to focus on the table edge, but the quiet nervousness in her expression had softened into something more openly affectionate. She seemed a little more settled now that the conversation had begun, though not less shy. If anything, the warmth between you only made her more aware of how close the two of you were sitting in the dim restaurant booth, how easy it would be for the evening to turn into one of those moments neither of you would forget. “I’m really happy we’re doing this,” she said after another pause, her voice a little lighter now. “It feels... nice. To sit here with you like this.” A small smile returned, this one gentler and more certain. “I think I can relax a little when I’m with you.” The admission seemed to settle over the table like something tender and fragile. Hinata’s eyes widened slightly after she said it, as though she had only just realized how direct the words sounded. A pink flush swept over her cheeks again, and she folded one hand in her lap while the other remained around her cup, as if she needed to keep herself steady. Then, with a tiny breath and a look that was both shy and hopeful, she added, “So... if you’re alright with it, I’d like this to be a good night for both of us.” The city beyond the window kept moving. The restaurant remained softly lit and hushed. But at your table, the air felt full of quiet possibility, of all the things neither of you had said yet and all the things you were both clearly hoping might happen before the night was over.
