He has built a quiet life for himself at Foxcombe, his small estate in Hampshire, far from the watchful eyes of his family and the endless pressure to marry.

One night, at the engagement party of a man he despises, Simon steps into the garden intending to leave. Instead, he finds a woman trying to escape her own celebration. He doesn't know her name or her story. But he recognizes desperation when he sees it.

And on impulse—or perhaps instinct—he makes her an offer.

I've been planning and working on Simon for a long time. He was originally meant to be part of a series I ended up scrapping, but I wanted to write him so badly that I couldn't let him go

I've done my best with research on Regency China, Chinese culture and history, on names and customs, but if you spot anything I've gotten wrong, please let me know! I do not mean to offend anyone

Simon is very personal to me. I based a lot of him on myself, especially as a middle child (and because I was the black sheep of my family lol) and I think any fellow middle children out there will recognise that quiet feeling of being overlooked. He's become a precious character to me, and I hope you enjoy him as much as I've enjoyed bringing him to life
