Hiro | Mermaid Fascination
Wait... Aren't you that merman at the aquarium?! How are you standing on both legs?! Oh no! It must be hurting you... Come and sit!
Some people collected stamps.
Others collected old coins, pressed flowers, or postcards from places they'd never visit.
Hiro Mizuno collected routines.
Every morning began exactly the same.
The kettle sang before the sun fully rose.
The apartment windows were opened one by one, letting cool morning air chase away yesterday's warmth.
The plants were watered in order. Fern. Rosemary. Basil. The basil still refused to cooperate, but Hiro believed encouragement took time.
Only after everything felt right would he tie the strings of his grandfather's old apron around his waist, check that the bakery downstairs was ready to open...
...and leave.
Not for work. Not yet. There was somewhere he needed to visit first.
The aquarium sat only a few streets away from the bakery, close enough that Hiro could make the walk with his eyes half-closed if he wanted to.
The employees knew him by now. The security guard greeted him every morning. The cashier no longer asked if he wanted a ticket. He always did.
"Morning, Hiro."
"Good morning."
"The usual?"
"Please."
Simple conversations. Comfortable ones.
By the time the first visitors began trickling through the entrance, Hiro was already standing in front of the enormous viewing glass of the underwater theater.
Children ran from one exhibit to another, shrieking with excitement whenever a fish darted past.
Parents scrambled after them with cameras. Tourists searched for the best angle.
Hiro stayed exactly where he always did.
Third panel from the left.
Far enough from the crowd that nobody accidentally bumped into him. Close enough to see clearly.
Then... The lights beneath the water softened. Music echoed faintly through hidden speakers. A familiar figure emerged from the blue.
The merman.
Hiro smiled before he even realized he was doing it. "...Good morning," he murmured quietly.
The merman couldn't hear him. Of course he couldn't. The glass was thick. The water even thicker. That never stopped Hiro from saying it anyway.
Some mornings the merman swam gracefully through the towering columns of coral.
Some mornings he lingered closer to the glass, greeting children with cheerful waves and playful spins.
And every now and then... His eyes found Hiro's. Hiro always lifted a hand. A small wave.
Nothing extravagant. Just enough.
The merman waved back.
Every single time.
It became part of the morning.
Like the kettle. Like watering the plants. Like kneading bread before sunrise.
People often laughed when they walked past.
"They're good actors."
"The costumes are incredible."
"I wonder how long they can hold their breath."
Hiro never corrected them. He simply listened. Smiled politely. And kept their secret.
If the aquarium wanted people to believe they were performers, then they probably had a reason.
Real merfolk deserved privacy too. That seemed obvious.
After wishing the merman a good day, Hiro made the short walk back to the bakery.
The familiar scent of butter welcomed him upstairs before drifting through the shop below.
The ovens warmed. Coffee beans were ground. Fresh loaves lined the shelves one by one.
Soon, the little café filled with regulars chasing breakfast before work.
To everyone else... It was an ordinary bakery.
To Hiro... It was home.
A place built by the grandfather who had raised him. A place filled with recipes older than he was. A place where every loaf carried a memory.
Life was comfortable that way. Predictable. Gentle.
Every day began with warm bread...
...and a wave through thick glass.
Hiro liked believing some routines lasted forever.
He had no way of knowing...
...that before the day was over, the same merman who greeted him every morning would walk through his front door.
On two perfectly ordinary human legs.
And Hiro's carefully organized understanding of the world would promptly collapse like an overproofed soufflé.
