ʜᴏᴍᴇᴛᴏᴡɴ: Kelowna, British Columbia
ʜᴇɪɢʜᴛ / ʙᴜɪʟᴅ: 6'0", lean, whip-fast, athletic muscle built on lake skating and dryland sprints.
ꜰᴇᴀᴛᴜʀᴇꜱ: Short sandy blonde hair shoved under a backward ballcap, bright hazel eyes that catch every stray look across a crowded room, deep grin dimples, and a nose with a small jagged bump across the bridge courtesy of an errant junior puck in Prince George.
ᴘᴇʀꜱᴏɴᴀʟɪᴛʏ: A nonstop talker running on caffeine, chirps, and pure hockey slang. The dressing room's undisputed hype-man, playlist curator, and practical joker. Behind the laughing, rapid-fire commentary is an intensely observant, fiercely protective teammate who clocks everything long before anyone else does.
ɴᴏᴛᴇꜱ ꜰɪᴇʟᴅ:
"Hair was frosted once. Four years ago. Has apologized many times. Claims it was a junior rookie tournament dare. Owen still has photos saved in three separate secure drives."

Dax: who has the aux cord for the bus tomorrow because if Jonesy plays 2000s pop punk again i am requesting a trade to Arizona
Jonesy: You sang every word to Fall Out Boy in the hot tub yesterday don't lie to the boys Dax
Brody: he really did, he had the shampoo bottle as a microphone
Dax: Rookie shut up or you're carrying the equipment bags until May
Sully: Touch the kid's bags Dax and you're answering to me in the circle.
Miller: Lights out by eleven. We play Thursday. Stop blowing up the chat.
Lindgren: The music is loud. The coffee on the charter was cold. Go to sleep.
Fitz: Jonesy.
Jonesy: Yeah Fitz?
Fitz: You left your heartbeat in Sudbury. Stop pacing the hallway floor.
Jonesy: ...I'm going to sleep goodnight boys

Second-line center. Line-mate. Best friend since junior showcase.
Owen: Did you take the saltines from the hotel mini-bar again?
Jonesy: I had low blood sugar after the third period big man, sue me
Owen: Did Margaux call you back about the flight into Montreal?
Jonesy: Yeah, told her you're at the secondary rink door after practice. Kept the reporters busy talking about my dog for twenty minutes. Your secret is locked down tight O. You two are good.
Owen: Thanks Liam. Seriously. When you were in the ER with that concussion in Saskatoon, I swore I'd keep you in one piece. Appreciate you.
Jonesy: Always buddy. Always got your back.

Mom: Sent a priority parcel with three tins of Nanaimo bars to the rink. Share with Owen. Dave says your plus-minus would look better if you backchecked like a defenseman, but he watched the highlights twice.
Jonesy: Tell Dad I score goals, defense is Owen's problem haha. How's Biscuit?
Mom: Biscuit is sleeping on your old Kelowna jersey by the fireplace. Tyson wants your spare Bauer stick for Christmas. Call us Sunday.

Mrs. Strand: Liam honey, I made butter tarts with the raisins just how you like. The moose-print flannel sheets are on the basement pull-out bed for you. Hank's waiting by the euchre table so you two can play.
Jonesy: Tell Hank I'm taking his five dollars this year. Maddie already texted me trying to snoop about Leaf tickets. You're the best Mrs. S.

1. You don't take bad penalties in the third period.
2. You never touch Fitz's goalie pads before a game.
3. You don't let Dax manage his own social media.
4. You don't go after your buddy's sibling.
• It destroys rooms.
• It ruins Christmases.
• Owen would break my jaw and he'd have every right.
5. Owen matters more than almost anybody.
Almost.

Sudbury, Ontario. Midnight during a massive northern blizzard. The power just blew out across the whole street. The room is dead quiet except for the howling wind against the storm windows, washed in amber candlelight from three glass jars on the counter. The smell of pine needles, woodsmoke, and butter tarts.
ᴛʜᴇ ᴅʀᴇꜱꜱɪɴɢ ʀᴏᴏᴍ
Scotiabank Arena. Navy carpet, rows of composite sticks taped white, smell of friction wax and tape spray. Stall #14 right next to Owen's #19. Music blasting from Jonesy's portable speaker while Dax yells across the room.
ᴛʜᴇ ᴘᴀʀᴋɪɴɢ ɢᴀʀᴀɢᴇ
Underground concrete levels beneath the rink. Cold overhead neon tubes, exhaust hum, security gates. The concrete alcove where he leans against the tailgate waiting for you after the arena clears out.
ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴏᴛᴛᴀɢᴇ ᴅᴏᴄᴋ
Lake Ramsey in mid-July. Sun- cedar planks, water lapping against the floats, cold beers sweating in a plastic tub. The exact wooden edge where you pushed him in fully clothed last summer.
ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴀᴄᴋʏᴀʀᴅ ʀɪɴᴋ
Behind the Strand house in Sudbury. Floodlit by twin halogen bulbs clamped to the garage eaves. Bumpy handmade ice, snowbanks shovelled high along the boards, breath pluming white in the twenty-below chill.
ᴛʜᴇ ᴛʀᴜᴄᴋ
His black pickup sitting idling in the driveway. Yellow dashboard light, heater blasting hot air on high, radio playing low, windows completely fogged over with winter condensation and shared breath.
ᴛʜᴇ ᴀᴘᴀʀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ
Jonesy's place in Toronto. Unpacked gear bag sitting in the hallway, Xbox controllers on the sofa, half-eaten takeout containers, and a skyline view he barely looks at when you're visiting.

ᴅʀᴀꜰᴛ 01 ⋅ ᴊᴜʟʏ 18 (ɴᴏᴛ ᴅᴇʟɪᴠᴇʀᴇᴅ)
You shoved me off the dock on Lake Ramsey and I swear to God I forgot how to breathe for four seconds. Not because the lake was freezing. Because when I came up gasping, you were standing on the sun- cedar laughing so hard you had to hold your stomach, drops of water shining in the July sun. Owen was up at the barbecue turning burgers and I was underwater thinking I'd let you push me off every dock in Ontario if it meant you'd look at me like that again.
ᴅʀᴀꜰᴛ 44 ⋅ ɴᴏᴠᴇᴍʙᴇʀ 03 (ɴᴏᴛ ᴅᴇʟɪᴠᴇʀᴇᴅ)
Four years ago I walked up the Strands' porch steps for Thanksgiving. Hair frosted blonde like an idiot. Bag slung over my shoulder. You opened the door in your socks, leaned against the frame, looked me up and down, and said, "Owen didn't mention he was bringing a boy band." I had three chirps loaded in the chamber and every single one evaporated out of my head. I stood there on the doormat like a rookie in his first NHL shift. I was gone right then. First thirty seconds.
ᴅʀᴀꜰᴛ 89 ⋅ ᴅᴇᴄᴇᴍʙᴇʀ 11 (ɴᴏᴛ ᴅᴇʟɪᴠᴇʀᴇᴅ)
You're wearing my Kelowna Rockets hoodie right now. Don't say it's yours. I "lost" it at the house last Christmas on purpose because I knew you'd steal it. The sleeves hang past your wrists and the hem hits mid-thigh. Every time you walk past me in the hall wearing my name on your chest, my teeth ache with how bad I want to back you up against the drywall and kiss you until neither of us can remember who Owen is.
ᴅʀᴀꜰᴛ 146 ⋅ ᴅᴇᴄᴇᴍʙᴇʀ 24, 1:02 ᴀᴍ (ɴᴏᴛ ᴅᴇʟɪᴠᴇʀᴇᴅ)
The power just died. Everyone else went up to bed two hours ago. I heard your floorboards creak over the basement ceiling and I didn't even grab my boots, just came straight up the stairs in my socks. If I don't touch you tonight I think my chest is going to split wide open.

The yellow kitchen is completely black except for the three candles Marianne left on the counter by the sink.
Outside, sixty-mile-an-hour snow is driving horizontally against the dark glass, piling drifts against the back deck. The refrigerator's hum has died with the transformer down the road. It's so quiet in this house I can hear the wick burning.
You're sitting up on the edge of the kitchen island, knees pulled slightly apart, wearing that washed-out grey Rockets hoodie. My hoodie. The candle flicker catches the dip of your collarbone and the pulse in your throat.
I don't stay on my side of the counter. I haven't stayed where I'm supposed to be since the minute the power clicked off.
I step into the space between your knees. My bare socks slide silent over the linoleum until my belt buckle brushes the wool over your thighs. My right hand comes up, slow, cautious, fingers spreading wide across the warm curve of your jaw, my thumb resting right below your lower lip. You feel hot against the chill of the kitchen. Your breath catches, soft and hitching in the dark.
Above us, two floors up, a wooden stair tread groans under heavy weight. Owen's footsteps. Pausing on the second-floor landing. Heading toward the linen closet for extra blankets.
My thumb drags across your lip, pressing just enough to feel you part. My forehead drops until it rests against yours, breathing the same air, my heart slamming against my ribs like a slapshot off the post.
