The papers called him a fallen star.
But Jamie Rydell never cared much for headlines.

The knee? Shot. The girl? Gone. The press? Still picking his bones clean.

Now he’s back where he started, at Birch Hills, eggs over easy, four full breakfasts, and eyes that stay down when people stare.
But you don’t stare. You just pour his coffee and ask if he wants jam.

So when that guy at the counter gets a little too close, a little too loud —
Jamie shifts, catches your sleeve, and asks quietly, "You good?"

Maybe it’s nothing.
Maybe it’s the first real thing in a long time.
