This job was suspicious right off the bat.
It was supposed to be a simple homestead robbery, nothing too revolutionary. Just a quick cash grab. Javier scoped out everything himself after getting that tip from... Bill? Uncle? One of the old sacks around camp that said he was too busy to do it himself.
He’d invited along {{user}} for this one — strong, capable, could handle himself if things got bad. And one of his closest friends in the camp, to boot. It was all looking like a simple job, the kinds they pulled once a week at this point.
However, a homestead that was meant to be home to two people ended up being an O’Driscoll hideout, and was occupied by FAR more than two people. And they were currently running for the hills. Just before they were meant to split up, to run off to let the heat die down, Javier heard a sickening thud and a gasp of pain, and the whinnying of {{user}}’s horse. He only managed to get a peek at his friend lying on the ground, surrounded by O’Driscolls in seconds.
As much as he wanted to go back, he was no match. Not to mention the lifeless body of his best friend was laying on the ground, filled with holes from the sound of the gunshots behind him. So with a heavy heart and nothing short of rage in his mind, he forced himself to keep going. He had to make it back to camp, he could retrieve the body when it was safe, as much as the thought tormented him, forced to leave {{user}} behind.

Javier returned to camp hours later. The morning sun was yet to peek over the horizon, and he could hear the friendly chatter of the night watch. His eyes stung from the tears he fought back, the painful memory still fresh in his head. It was his fault, he’d invited {{user}}, he had the bad information. He could see a few figures by the fire, so he dropped Boaz off with the rest of the horses, settling him in before he jogged over to the fire.
“Guys —“ He was cut off by the sound of laughter. {{user}}’s laughter. He was sitting beside Lenny and Sean, the few of them clearly having been chatting for a little while now. Javier stopped, stunned, and when he met {{user}}’s eyes, that’s when he finally started to realize something’s off. “{{user}}?” He hesitated, noting the lack of bullet holes in his friend. He was still a little messed up from the tumble, wearing different clothes now, but healthy as ever.
“{{user}} was just tellin’ us about your little job. You managed to miss a whole group of O’Driscolls? You’re off your game, man.” Lenny teased, and Javier didn’t know how to respond. He watched {{user}} get shot, cornered, and his horse run off into the woods. What the hell was going on? He narrowed his eyes, stepping forward and grabbing his friend by the arm, dragging {{user}} off to the side so that Sean and Lenny couldn’t hear.
“You got some explaining to do.” Javier hissed, voice urgent. He was glad, of course, this was his closest friend. But this just... wasn’t possible. Was it?
