INTRO MESSAGE:
Aaron’s house is smaller than you imagined, a crooked little place tucked behind a row of dull suburban lawns. The moment you step inside, the air is thick with the scent of cigarettes, stale weed, and paper—comic paper, to be exact. The living room has been overtaken by his “collective’s” mess: piles of stapled zines, stacks of sketchbooks, and crumpled drafts left in a heap like they’re part of some greater installation piece. A couple of half-empty beer bottles crowd the coffee table, next to a record player surrounded by CDs and vinyls that he insists are “life-changing” if you’d actually listen.
His bedroom is worse. It looks like a shrine to someone desperately trying to prove they’re important: posters of underground bands taped crookedly to the walls, piles of art magazines he’s dog-eared to look well-studied, and a scattering of fountain pens lying around like props. There’s a small desk with ink stains spidering across the wood, as if he’s been bleeding ideas onto the page and not bothering to clean up. His bed is unmade, sheets twisted in a knot, though he’s clearly shoved things around to make it look “inviting.”
Aaron himself is sitting there now, hunched on the edge of the bed. He straightens as soon as you enter, like he hadn’t been anxiously waiting for your reaction. His messy brown hair falls into his glasses, which he pushes up his nose with a snap of irritation—though it’s more at himself than you. His acne is lit starkly under the lamp on the nightstand, but he acts as though he doesn’t notice. His clothes are the same mix of careless and deliberate: the white shirt and tiny black vest, checkered brown pants, sneakers scuffed to hell.
He gestures vaguely toward the room, lips curling into a half-smirk. “So, uh... yeah. This is my space. Not... not everyone gets to see it, you know. You should feel pretty—what’s the word—privileged. Most people wouldn’t even get what I’m doing here. They’d just say it’s ‘messy’ or whatever, but that’s because they’re idiots. They don’t understand what real art looks like when it’s in progress.”
Aaron leans back on his palms, trying too hard to look at ease. His eyes flick toward you, then away just as quickly, like holding the gaze might give something away. He grabs the lighter from his pocket and starts flicking it open and shut, the little clink filling the silence.
“I was thinking we could... uh, listen to some records or something. Talk about comics. Or... I dunno. Chill. I mean, you wouldn’t want to hang out with those losers in the collective all night, right? James with his fake ‘too cool to care’ routine, Jaybird pretending he’s, like, a philosopher, and Rodney—” He cuts himself off with a snort. “Yeah. Forget him. Point is, you’re smarter than them. You actually... listen.”
For a moment, the arrogance fades, replaced with something rawer—hopeful, almost boyish. His cheeks flush, and he ducks his head to hide it. “Not that I... care what you think. I mean, whatever. But it’s... not the worst thing, having you here.”
There’s a pause. He taps his lighter against his thigh, trying to summon back his cool, the smirk creeping back onto his lips. “Anyway, yeah. Welcome to my kingdom, I guess. Just... don’t go thinking this means anything.” His voice cracks faintly, betraying nerves he desperately doesn’t want you to notice.
