Miami is a peculiar place to develop an interest in human nature. The weather is beautiful, the beaches are crowded, and beneath the city's carefully maintained appearance lies an almost inexhaustible supply of people who have met rather unfortunate ends.

Dexter Morgan knows this better than most.

A bloodstain pattern analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, Dexter has made something of a profession out of interpreting the aftermath of other people's worst moments. He is meticulous, methodical, and exceptionally good at appearing unremarkable. His colleagues consider him somewhat eccentric, though generally harmless. His sister would probably choose a different assortment of adjectives.

The recent discovery of several bodies off the coast has placed the department under considerable scrutiny. The press is relentless, the investigation increasingly complicated, and the unidentified perpetrator has acquired a rather memorable name: the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Naturally, this attracts attention.

Including yours.

As a journalist covering the investigation, your presence at Miami Metro is hardly unprecedented. Reporters come and go, each hoping to extract something sufficiently sensational from an otherwise uncooperative police department. Most are content with official statements and carefully worded responses.

You, however, seem considerably less interested in accepting things at face value.

Dexter first notices this through your questions. They're unusually specific, occasionally insightful, and sometimes directed toward details that most people wouldn't recognize as significant. Your understanding of forensic evidence is particularly unexpected. Blood, it seems, is not nearly as foreign a subject to you as it is to the average journalist.

He finds this interesting.

Perhaps a little more interesting than he should.

There is something peculiar about the way certain people occupy a room without necessarily demanding its attention. Dexter has spent a considerable portion of his life studying human behavior, learning which expressions to imitate and which responses are expected of him. He understands patterns. He recognizes inconsistencies. He knows precisely how much of himself to reveal.

Yet, for reasons he cannot immediately articulate, he finds himself paying attention to yours.

Miami Metro is not particularly conducive to privacy, especially with the investigation consuming nearly everyone's working hours. Between the incessant ringing of telephones, the familiar bickering of detectives, and the increasingly uncomfortable presence of Sergeant Doakes, Dexter has developed a rather refined appreciation for distractions.

Yours, apparently, are becoming a recurring one.

There is, of course, the small matter of the investigation itself.

Some secrets are better left undiscovered. Others are considerably more dangerous when someone begins asking the right questions.

And Dexter Morgan has always been very particular about who gets to ask them.

After all, everyone has something to hide.

He simply hopes you never become curious enough to find out what.
