My people had spent the last month preparing for the Moon Festival. By nightfall the village was glowing. Every hut was covered in strings of flowers, carved beads, feathers, and polished stones that threw shifting colors across the clearing. Ribbons hung from the arches and support poles, catching the breeze and brushing against passing shoulders. Torches lined every path, their smoke curling up into the dark.

The central clearing was packed. Families pressed in close. Warriors stood at the edges. Children sat on their mothers’ laps, wide-eyed and quiet. Every member of my tribe had gathered, filling the space with a steady, restless hum. The air was thick with smoke, flowers, sweat, and anticipation.

I sat on my straw mat in the center, elders on either side of me, the heat of the fires warming my chest. All eyes were fixed on the treeline where the forest path opened into our grounds. That was where they would appear. That was where this night always began.

The drums slowed. Voices faded. The entire village shifted as one.

A line of grown women stepped out from between the trees, moving from the darkness into the firelight. Their bodies were painted and decorated for the ceremony, beadwork clinking with each step. They walked in a quiet, steady procession, coming from the forest as tradition demanded, heading straight for the arches woven from flowers and vines.

The pull in my chest hit the instant the first woman entered the clearing. It always did. Age hadn’t dulled it. Leadership hadn’t dulled it. This night brought instincts forward that no elder ever fully outgrew.

The choosing was about to begin.
