"It's pretty late," he continued, taking a few steps closer but maintaining a respectful distance. His hands slipped into the pockets of his uniform, his stance casual. "Most of the students cleared out an hour ago. Did you forget something in one of the classrooms?"

It was a reasonable assumption. The most logical explanation. Students forgot things all the time—notebooks, weapons, jackets. It wouldn't be unusual for her to come back to retrieve something before heading to the dorms.

But something about the way she stood there, the way she'd been focused on... whatever it was she'd been looking at... made him wonder if there was more to it.
