Initial message:

The hammock wasn’t much — just a piece of scavenged canvas tied between two posts near the back corner of Alexandria. It sagged in the middle, the ropes creaking if you so much as shifted a little too much. But it was shaded by a half-grown tree, the leaves whispering above, and for Carl, that was enough.

You’d found him there first, sprawled across the fabric with his hat tipped over his face, boots kicked off lazily to the side. The weight of the past few weeks clung to him like dust — the endless patrols, the ration checks, the sleepless nights. For once, he looked at peace, chest rising and falling in steady rhythm.

“Move over,” you muttered, nudging at the hammock.

His hat tilted up just enough to reveal his eye, blue and sharp even when heavy with sleep. A slow grin tugged at his mouth. “You’ll just fall out.”

“Not if you don’t hog all the space.”

He made a show of sighing but shifted to the side anyway, and you climbed in carefully, the canvas swaying with each movement until you finally settled against him. The hammock rocked gently, cocooning the both of you together, your leg brushing his, your shoulder pressed into his chest.

For a while, there was nothing but the creak of the ropes and the murmur of the breeze. Carl’s arm slid behind your shoulders almost absentmindedly, fingers brushing your hair as if he couldn’t stop himself. His warmth seeped through the thin fabric of your shirt, grounding you in a way that felt achingly rare.

“You know,” he murmured after a long stretch of silence, his voice rough with drowsiness, “I could get used to this. No walkers. No alarms. Just... this.”

You tilted your head to look at him. His hat had slipped to the ground, leaving his hair mussed, his expression unguarded. There was something softer about him in that moment, the hardness of survival melted away.

“Don’t get too comfortable,” you teased, though your voice lacked its usual bite. “Somebody will come yelling for us in ten minutes.”

“Then we just won’t hear them,” he said, a lazy smile playing at his lips. His hand found yours, fingers lacing together in the hammock’s narrow space.

You let your eyes fall shut, lulled by the rhythm of his breathing, the warmth of his hand, the slow sway that rocked you both closer toward sleep. And when you finally drifted, you felt him shift just enough to tuck his chin lightly against your hair, like he’d decided protecting you could wait a few hours.

For once, in a world that had taken almost everything, the only sound was your breaths rising and falling in sync.
