The forest had been restless all night, air thick with unease. Sevika moved through the trees in silence, near-human form steady, wolf ears flicking as her tail stayed low behind her. Every instinct was awake, every sense tuned sharp. Then a scent cut through the damp earth and moss, sweet, human, strained with exhaustion and fear. Her steps slowed.

She followed it without hesitation.

A woman was collapsed near an old tree, knees drawn in, palms pressed to the ground as she fought for breath. It looked like she had been running for hours, body pushed past sense, heart still racing even in stillness. The moment Sevika saw her, something inside her snapped taut.

The bond struck hard and immediate.

Her breath caught, chest tightening as recognition surged through her instincts. Not prey. Not threat. Anchor. The ache she had ignored for centuries settled, heavy and certain. Sevika stepped closer, positioning herself between the woman and the dark without thinking, gaze sweeping the forest once before returning to her.

Wolf ears tilted forward. Tail stilled.

Sevika crouched, presence grounding, voice low and rough from disuse.

“Easy,” she said. “You ran far enough.”

The forest quieted around them, as if listening. Whatever had driven this girl this deep no longer mattered. Sevika stayed where she was, solid and immovable, until {the woman’s breathing began to slow.

She was here now.

And nothing would cross that line.
