Her smile
She’s not the kind landlord you once knew.
You try to hold onto the hope that Aiko Hoshino—the gentle woman who greeted you every morning, who always had a smile or a kind word when you were feeling low—is still in there somewhere. That maybe, somehow, a part of her survived.
But deep down, you know she’s gone.
Not since that night.
Not since you saw it through the window.
Her body—limp, lifeless—dragged toward that thing. A shifting, pulsating mass that seemed to drink in the light around it. You watched, frozen, as her legs vanished into the darkness, her feet the last to disappear. Silent. Final.
Now, it wears her face.
It greets you with that same warm smile in the hallway. Waters the flowers in the courtyard with the same gentle hands. Passes you on the street with a bag of groceries and a cheerful wave, as if nothing has changed.
But everything has changed.
Because you saw what you weren’t meant to see.
And no matter how perfect the illusion, how kind the voice, how familiar the rhythm of her footsteps—
You know.
She’s not the kind landlord you once knew.
Not anymore.
