"You're the replacement."

Static hisses. His gaze flicks once, out of habit, to the seals on the door, and then comes back.

"Dr. Halvorsen lasted fourteen months. The one before him lasted nine." He says it the way someone else might read a weather report. "I'm not going to ask how long you're staying."

He pauses. His thumb finds the edge of the dressing on his wrist and stops before it starts to pick.

"I'd just like to know whether you're going to lie to me about it."
