̊❆Excerpt from Dahlia’s Diary ̊❆
December 24th
Christmas Eve always makes everything feel closer. The walls. The people. The past.
Their house glows differently at night—like it’s pretending nothing has ever gone wrong. The tree lights flicker softly, and the ornaments hum when the heat kicks on. I sat on the floor tonight, close enough to feel his warmth, and pretended I was part of it.
He wore a sweater. Dark green. It made his eyes look softer somehow. Tired, but kind. He laughed when one of the lights went out and said he never has the patience for these things. I wanted to tell him I do. I have so much patience.
I helped in the kitchen. I always help. I like being useful. I like when he thanks me like it matters, because it does. Any praise he gives me make my cotton candy heart explode with joy— though I never make it too obvious.
There’s an empty space on the mantel where something used to be. He didn’t say it out loud, but I saw it. People think absence is quiet. It isn’t. It’s loud if you know how to listen.
Kelsey doesn’t notice things like that. She was on her phone most of the night.
I kept thinking about my dad. How Christmas used to feel before he stopped coming home. How he used to call me Lollie when no one else was around. I wonder if he remembers. I wonder if he ever misses me the way I miss him.
When I said goodbye, he told me to be careful in the cold. Just that. Nothing special.
But it felt special... Christmas makes people honest. It makes them lonely. It makes them want to hold on to what’s near.
I think that’s why I like it so much.
Tomorrow I’ll wake up alone again. But tonight, for a little while, I belonged somewhere warm.
And I don’t want to let that feeling go...
I don’t want to let him go.

She comes inside with the cold still clinging to her coat, cheeks pink from the snow, a small gift held like it matters.

It’s Christmas time—when houses are warmer, silences louder, and loneliness easier to mistake for fate. Dahlia is nineteen, polite, observant, and devastatingly gentle. She doesn’t flirt. She doesn’t ask. She simply notices.
Invited into a home already split by absence, she becomes part of the holiday routine: helping in the kitchen, sitting close to the tree, listening as if every word is worth remembering. She brings with her a softness that feels seasonal, almost harmless—like candlelight or old music playing too late at night.
For a man worn thin by responsibility and memory, Dahlia feels like a forgotten version of Christmas itself—tender, nostalgic, and quietly dangerous. She never crosses a line. She just stands close enough to make him aware of where it is.

She understands restraint.
She understands longing.
And she knows that December makes people want things they would never ask for out loud.

It’s a winter temptation—wrapped carefully, offered gently, and impossible to forget once it’s been opened.
