On a night bus ride, 19-year-old Jennifer is given an unfinished storybook by a mysterious boy, but he runs away before she can return it. While following him to the dilapidated Rose Garden Orphanage, she finds a dog collar, and witnesses masked children in the orphanage beating a bloody sack. Jennifer infiltrates the orphanage and a funeral is announced, which the boy claims is for her "dear friend". Jennifer arrives after the funeral, and unearths the coffin to find the bloody sack inside, but the masked orphans attack and force her into the coffin, taking her onto an airship. She wakes up as the captive of the mysterious boy, who introduces himself as the Prince of the Red Rose. She is forcibly inducted as the lowest ranked member of the Red Rose Aristocracy, which requires monthly gifts given at an altar as tithes for the Prince and Princess of the Red Rose. Failure to provide an adequate gift will lead to humiliation and punishment. The Prince then gives Jennifer several handmade, surreal storybooks to help recover her lost memories and a forgotten oath she had made. He then releases her to participate in club activities. Each of the storybook's contents directly reflect a month of the club's activities, and Jennifer frequently suffers cruel punishment rituals for incidents caused by higher-ranking members. She manages to rescue a yellow Labrador named Brown, who accompanies her. She also befriends the other lower-class members, Amanda and Wendy, who warn her about a monster called Stray Dog that eats children. Jennifer also earn a promotion to the second lowest rank, which requires demoting Amanda in her place and taking part in the punishment ritual against her.

After finishing all of the storybooks and through them recalling part of the oath she had made, Jennifer is kidnapped from the airship by a suicidal man named Gregory, and is left in a rose garden. Jennifer follows him into the basement of his home, where she is trapped. She discovers a stuffed bear, more handmade storybooks, and letters between Wendy and a boy named Joshua, who address each other as "Princess" and "Prince" respectively. Wendy appears at the basement window and rescues Jennifer, and also steals Gregory's gun to prevent him from committing . Before re-boarding the airship from the rose garden, Wendy trades Jennifer a rose-shaped brooch for the stuffed bear, and names it Joshua.

Back on the airship, the club is in a state of emergency trying to find the stolen stuffed bear, which acts as their Prince. They promise a red crayon, which is a token of membership in the Aristocracy, to anyone who finds the bear. Jennifer recovers the bear from Amanda, but when Jennifer presents the bear at the altar, she learns that Amanda has framed her for stealing it, out of jealousy for having been demoted earlier. The Aristocrats brutally attack Jennifer, and Jennifer wakes up back at the orphanage with a broken red crayon. All the Aristocrats from the airship are present, but they all either ignore or harass her, except for Wendy, who is the sole orphan that remains friendly towards her. After informing Jennifer of an important club meeting, both Wendy and Brown disappear. From the harassment, Jennifer learns that herself and Brown are wanted as the monthly gift. In an attempt to rescue Brown, she follows a bloody trail to the attic and discovers Brown's corpse within the bloody sack at the club altar. The Aristocrats emerge to taunt Jennifer, and Wendy reveals that she is Princess of the Red Rose and had ordered Brown's death. Outraged, Jennifer slaps Wendy and throws away her brooch. She denounces the Aristocrats and herself for not standing up to them. Wendy runs away from the orphanage in a humiliated rage.

Without a leader, and abandoned by any adults in charge, the Aristocrats elect Jennifer as their new Princess. Before she can decline, the orphans see Wendy outside and leave to chase her away. Shortly afterward, Jennifer hears their screams and follows them outside, where the missing Prince is leading Stray Dog and killing the Aristocrats. The Prince reveals to Jennifer than he is actually Wendy in disguise, and she admits to Jennifer that in order to get revenge, Wendy conspired to make the story of Stray Dog come true, and forced Gregory to become it by pretending to be his son, Joshua, in order to manipulate him to massacre all of the orphans. Distressed by the reality of her actions, she gives Jennifer the stolen gun so she can stop Gregory, and is then killed. When Gregory sees Jennifer, he asks 'Joshua' to give him the gun, and shoots himself instead.

Jennifer once more awakens as her child self

realizes that all the events that occurred were her lost and distorted memories of her childhood. In reality, before meeting Wendy, Jennifer was kidnapped from an airship wreck by Gregory and made to live as a boy in order to replace his missing son, Joshua. Wendy discovered Jennifer living as 'Joshua', and the pair formed a pseudo-romance. She rescued and brought Jennifer to the orphanage for companionship and together formed the Red Crayon Aristocrats. Jennifer was made the Prince, and Wendy became the Princess. They made a loyalty oath to each other, and exchanged Jennifer's bear for Wendy's brooch as proof of their promise. Later, Jennifer adopted a puppy she named Brown and started to neglect club duties to care for him. Wendy became deeply jealous of Jennifer's love for Brown, and demoted Jennifer from the position of Prince, replacing her with the stuffed bear. She also ordered the club members to torment her, and ultimately ordered Brown's death to try and force Jennifer to come back to her, which lead to the events of the orphanage massacre. The media quickly abandoned the massacre story after realizing Jennifer was the only survivor of the airship wreck, leaving the orphans forgotten by everyone. Within her memories, Jennifer locates Brown inside the shed, gives him the collar she found bearing his name, and inscribes her oath on a chalkboard. Vowing to protect her memories, she leaves the shed and locks the door behind her.

Wendy is a character in Rule of Rose. She is introduced as a sweet and kind girl who is the only one pleasant to Jennifer, and was Jennifer's childhood girlfriend. However, it is eventually revealed she was the secret founder of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club. Wendy uses her innocent appearance to her advantage in order to avoid suspicion.

She is a frail sickly child who often coughs because of her unspecified sickness. She is often bedridden and is known as the "girl who always lays in her bed" or, to older Jennifer, as "The Lonely Princess."

Wendy is a little girl with a pale complexion. Her most notable trait is her blonde straight hair and her typically wearing a hat. She also has blue eyes. Clothing wise, her typical outfit consists of a baby blue dress with a white apron atop it, her sun hat, brown shoes and short socks. Whenever she is in the sick room, she instead wears a no-sleeve sleeping gown.

Her Princess of the Red Rose outfit is her most elaborate, bearing resemblance to the doll in the club room. Consisting of reds, she wears a red dress with a white bow and white frills at the skirt area, white tights, brown formal shoes, and a red and white hat tied to her chin. When disguising as Joshua, she puts on a wig alongside black shorts and a white button-up with a green ribbon tie

Wendy is initially seen as admirable, sweet and caring, and is the only one who is nice to Jennifer - at least for a while. She appears innocent because of her gentle and frail appearance. Wendy and Jennifer were both best friends and lovers. Wendy had to stay in the sick room due to her frail health, which was why she was always lonely and had few friends. This caused her to be unhealthily obsessed with Jennifer, feeling betrayed once the girl focuses on Brown. Wendy hides her jealousy and anger over Jennifer's attachment to Brown, and instead, temporarily accepts it and considers the dog of no importance. Wendy seems very desperate for love and affection, possibly due to being an orphan with no sources of love in her life.

In regards to the other orphans, most of them seem to respect her minus Amanda. She convinced them all that Stray Dog was real to the point where Meg would record notes on it. Wendy also appears to have an interest in toys. She specifically likes dolls and teddy bears as she traded her brooch for Jennifer's bear. Said bear always sits next to a porcelain doll representing Wendy.

In November 1929, Wendy explored the rural area outside of the orphanage when she found "The Gingerbread House" where Gregory M. Wilson lived. She saw a basement window, and inside, saw what appeared to be a boy, who was actually Jennifer dressed in Joshua's clothing. She started to pass notes through the window, presumably through a crack in the window, back and forth between herself and Jennifer, while eventually Jennifer revealed herself to be a girl. She and Wendy were such close friends that they nicknamed each other Prince and Princess, and Jennifer did not mind being the Prince.

One night (implied to be January 28, 1930), Wendy helped Jennifer escape the house and move into the orphanage. Just before leaving Gregory's house, she took his gun in a bag. She gave Jennifer her rose brooch in exchange for a stuffed bear.

Wendy was the girl who started the Stray Dog rumors, leading to the foundation of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club. She probably began it because she was bedridden and lonely, and if other children listened to her, she could receive attention. After the incident when she rescued Jennifer, she told everyone in the orphanage the rumors about how Stray Dog would kidnap children. Due to the fright and curiosity that it caused them, they allowed her to become the Princess of the Red Rose. Due to Wendy being bedridden most of time, she was substituted with a doll resembling her.

Jennifer eventually found another companion - an abandoned puppy she later named Brown. Wendy became increasingly jealous because Jennifer gradually spent more time with Brown instead of Wendy, apparently considering Brown to be nothing more than a filthy animal. In a fit of rage, Wendy demanded that all of the orphanage belittle Jennifer and treat her poorly, so that she would eventually forget Brown and return to her side. This failed, however, so Wendy demanded that they kill Brown as a last resort.

In late November 1930, When Brown was killed and Wendy revealed herself to Jennifer as the Princess of the Red Rose, Jennifer slapped Wendy to the ground, telling her to "go away!" and swearing to never forgive her. Heartbroken and humiliated, Wendy ran out the room in tears. Wendy was dethroned from the Aristocracy, and Jennifer became the new Princess of the Red Rose.

Relationships

Jennifer

Wendy originally met Jennifer when she was trapped by Gregory. As such, she mistook her for a boy. As the two wrote to each other, they began to fall in love. Wendy would soon help Jennifer escape. Although she would later find out Jennifer was a girl, she still felt romantic feelings towards her. The two would declare to love each other forevermore.

After Jennifer finds Brown, Wendy grew bitter towards her. She offered to have them both take care of the dog, only for Wendy to declare she just get rid of it. This would result in Wendy enlisting the help of the aristocrats to bully Jennifer for several months. Because Jennifer promised to protect Brown though, nothing changed. As a last resort, she declared Brown be murdered. After his death, Jennifer proceeds to slap Wendy multiple times and got rid of her brooch. Younger Jennifer also proclaimed to hate Wendy alongside the aristocrats and to never forgive her.

Brown

Wendy hates Brown. She finds him to be disgusting and an annoyance. However, her primary reason for hating him is Jennifer’s attachment to the dog. Wendy felt betrayed and that she loved him more. Thus, as a last resort, she has Brown be murdered. In regards to Brown’s thoughts, as a dog, he never growls at her. Furthermore, he willingly lets Wendy touch him and take him away during the Funeral chapter. He likely didn’t expect/comprehend what would later happen to him.

Diana

As the self-proclaimed leader of the club, Diana is in charge of enacting the wishes of the Princess. Wendy will proclaim the monthly gift while Diana punishes those who don’t follow. Diana alongside the other children also believed in Stray Dog. This would thus have her listen to Wendy despite being older.

Meg

Meg is in charge of announcing the Princess’ messages. She was the one to reveal Jennifer’s social rank was increased for Wendy. She also claims to occasionally report to Wendy in regards to slackers or Stray Dog. She uses her abilities to also create torture devices for the club. After Wendy was dethroned though, she instead favors Jennifer. There is cut dialogue where Meg mentions going to check on what Wendy is up to as everyone rushes downstairs.

Clara

Clara is seen taking care of Wendy in the sickroom. Even without this, there are implications she and Hoffman are the two characters who take care of Wendy. Wendy and Clara are both almost always in the sickbay or sickroom. Thus, typically Clara is in charge of helping the younger girl. Their thoughts on each other are unknown though. Clara was not a member of the club, thus she didn’t see Wendy as a leader at least.

Character: Diana

Aliases Princess Diana

The Proud Leader

Social Rank Duchess

Gender Female

Age Teenager (13)

Hair color Auburn red

Eye color Blue

Occupation Student/resident at Rose Garden Orphanage

"You're a disgrace. Nothing, worse than nothing! Your gift is worth NOTHING!"

—Diana to Jennifer about her blue butterfly gift before shoving her to the floor.

Diana is one of the orphans at Rose Garden Orphanage and a member of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club. Ranked Duchess, she has the highest social placement in the Aristocracy and she is also the highest ranking member of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club, under the Princess of the Red Rose.

She is the oldest member of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club. While her age is uncertain, she is estimated to be in her mid-teens.

Diana is a young pale girl around her mid-teens. Her most striking trait is her auburn curly hair. She also has freckles adorning her nose and blue piercing eyes. Her normal clothes consists of an oversized brown dress with tan stripes atop it, a green tie hanging from the collar, and brown dirty boots. When curtsying, a white bandage can be seen at her right leg.

Personality

Jennifer thought Diana was the prettiest and most "mature" of the Aristocrats, although Jennifer likely means mature in the physical aspect instead. Diana has been involved in acts of abuse, torture and cruelty against animals. She is seen beating something in a bag, involved with the death of a rat, was responsible for killing Eleanor's bird, and condoned the killing of Brown.

Diana is a very devious troublemaker and has a two-faced nature. She has badmouthed Eleanor and Meg, although she pretends to like them when she is in their presence. She once pulled a prank on Eleanor by stealing and killing her red bird. Afterwards, she and Meg made a bet to see if she would cry or get furious, which ended up with both of them losing since Eleanor did neither. After Meg gave her a love letter, Diana ripped it in half and stuffed it into a stuffed goat doll. When Meg learned of what had become of her letter, Meg only cried in Diana's arms, believing Jennifer did it.

Diana appears to have a strong dislike for Jennifer, likely due to the whole koi incident. Diana looks for any opportunity to bully her, torment her, make her feel terrible and ruin her self-esteem with insults. Diana is a proud, selfish and cruel girl in personality who often looks forward to punishing people as seen when Jennifer gave the Aristocrats the gift of a butterfly. Diana even goes as far as to stand up on a chair for the sake of being able to look down upon Jennifer, displaying her pride and making her feel inferior. Jennifer spoke poorly of her, saying that Diana was trapped by her own ideals. When Jennifer is declared the new Rose princess after she finally stands up for herself, Diana asks for Jennifer's forgiveness for her previous behavior and is willing to follow Jennifer's orders. How genuine this was is unknown.

Hoffman claims that Diana is his favorite to the point of having her watch over his koi fish. After said fish is killed, he proceeds to blame her as he suggestively carcasses her and proclaims no one would want to adopt her.

It is unclear when Diana arrived at the orphanage, although she had clearly been there for a long while when Jennifer arrived.

Diana is the self-proclaimed leader of the Aristocrat Club under the Princess of the Red Rose. Although messages from the Rose Princess are given to Meg, it is usually Diana who dispenses punishments and rewards on the other members of the Club. Despite her arrogance and cruel tendencies, Diana appears content in following the Princess of the Rose's orders and does not seem to have any desire to take the position herself.

Diana learned about the legend of "Stray Dog" from Wendy. When Wendy issued a Rule of Rose to the other orphans not to speak to Jennifer to make her feel isolated, Diana obliged by ignoring Jennifer all the time. Wendy's final Rule of Rose to murder Jennifer's pet dog Brown was also partially obliged by Diana. Even after Jennifer violently lashes out at Wendy and shows her hatred towards the other orphans, Diana remains stoic.

Diana is first seen beating something in a bag with a stick, perhaps Brown or a live animal. Diana is among the rest of the orphans who abduct Jennifer and take her to the airship.

On the airship, Diana is seen in various areas, mainly in the Sector 10 Crew Cabin sitting at the table. She is also seen in the Aristocrat Club meeting area where she attends the meetings and watches the punishments take place. For "Sir Peter," she is seen at the vip room taking care of Hoffman's fish. She will say to hurry or else Amanda will find Peter first. Once Jennifer is told to punish Amanda, Diana can be seeing kicking at the teen's back to force her.

In "Goat Sisters," Diana finds a love letter written by Meg. This infuriates her. She tears the letter into two pieces and attempted to feed it to a goat. When questioned by the wise-looking princess, Diana pretends to not know anything and feigns innocence. Jennifer soon finds both pieces... only for the trio to see her with it. Meg cries into Diana's arms who carcasses her. She then goes along with the Onion Bag punishment suggested by the blonde.

During the "Bird of Happiness" chapter, she and Meg steal Eleanor's dress and bird. They proceed to smother it and stuff the pet inside three separate boxes. After doing so, the girls call out Jennifer for ease-dropping. Diana claims if she doesn't hurry, Eleanor will cry which Meg refutes. Thus, they agree to make a bet out of her reaction. After Eleanor finds out, the two girls watch for her response... only for Eleanor to quietly take the bird's corpse and give it as a gift. The girls are left merely shrugging.

Relationships: Meg

Diana is shown to be annoyed by Meg. She mentions her to be a pain to Eleanor and, after receiving her love letter, ripped it apart. She then uses said letter as an opportunity to blame Jennifer for it instead. When Meg is around her however, Diana pretends to care for her. She consoles her after the love letter incident and also works alongside her as a fellow aristocrat. The duo also teamed up to pull a prank on Eleanor.

As mentioned, Meg has a romantic crush towards Diana. She wrote a love letter to her in the Goat Sisters chapter and seems to idolize her. However, for the sake of the club, Meg was willing to kill Hoffman’s koi fish which caused Diana to be blamed. While Meg does care for her, she puts the club at a higher priority.

Despite her dislike, Diana is shown in the opening movie first causing Meg to prick her finger on an offered rose before Diana sucks on it. This alludes to Meg's feelings for Diana, Diana's awareness of this, as well as her compulsion to be cruel to others and put herself in a position of control over them.

Eleanor

Akin to Meg, Diana doesn’t look positively at Eleanor. While she is willing to vent to her about being annoyed about Meg, she also saw her as an annoyance. She went along with Meg’s plan to steal her clothes and kill her pet bird. Diana suspected she would cry after finding it. However, Eleanor instead silently took it as a gift for the aristocrat club. Because Eleanor doesn’t talk back and follows orders to a T, Diana has less of an issue with her.

Jennifer

Diana hates Jennifer. Diana has a constant need of portraying herself as being in control, with Jennifer being the primary victim. This is due to her low rank and the koi fish incident. For the latter case, Diana mistook Jennifer as the one to have killed Hoffman’s fish. She thus attempts smothering her with a dirty rag. In real life, Jennifer was also younger than Diana, adding onto the constant bullying.

Amanda

As one of the low-class members, Amanda is one of the members constantly tortured by the main trio. She acts submissive towards them and betrays Jennifer in hopes of approval. As such, Diana would constantly switch between nice or cruel to her. She thinks lowly of her. Amanda however fears her and the others.

Character: Meg

Aliases Princess Meg

Margaret

The Intellectual

Social Rank Baroness

Gender Female

Age Child (12)

Hair color Blonde

Eye color Blue

Occupation Student/resident at Rose Garden Orphanage

Margaret, more commonly called Meg, holds the third spot in the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club. Intelligent, but inflexible, she considers herself faultless and carries a notebook containing club rules, notes, and punishment plans with her everywhere. She invents the torture instruments that Jennifer and Amanda are punished with.

Meg is a small child with pale skin. Her most notable trait is her round glasses. In her blonde short hair is a pink headband. She typically wears a green long sleeve with a pink tie, a tan vest with a diamond pattern, a light brown pleated skirt, white socks reaching her knees, and brown laced shoes.

Meg is a prim girl with a certain preoccupation with rules; for example, her notebook contains lessons on how to properly curtsy. She is intelligent and articulate. Jennifer, perhaps condescendingly, thought of Meg as a "know-it-all", likely because Meg is shown having an elitist and arrogant attitude when it comes to her knowledge. She acts superior to other people simply because she has more knowledge about certain topics.

Meg has the mechanical mind of an engineer or inventor, but uses her talents to create torture devices like the Torture Stick and "icky water", rather than improve conditions on the airship. As the Baroness, she is enthusiastic about using her devices on the lower class members such as Jennifer and Amanda.

When she discovers Jennifer with her torn love letter, Meg is heartbroken and cries. She then immediately has her punished with the Onion Bag, showing her cruel side. Later, when Jennifer stands up to The Aristocrat Club, Meg is seen cowering in fear behind her notebook, whereas Diana and Eleanor are nonchalant, suggesting that Meg, unlike the others, has not yet learned to cope with stress and could be considered a coward.

Meg is a resident of Rose Garden Orphanage. She loves to read and is called a "know-it-all" by Jennifer. During the game, Meg can usually be found reading in the library. She is also close to Susan, often helping her read.

Although intelligent, she also believes Wendy's legend about Stray Dog, just as the other children do, and takes researching Stray Dog very seriously. She often writes her reports about the Stray Dog legends in her notebook and gives orders to the other members of the club to investigate.

When Wendy issued a Rule of Rose to the other orphans not to speak to Jennifer to make her feel isolated, Meg obliged by ignoring Jennifer all the time. Wendy's final Rule of Rose to murder Jennifer's pet dog Brown was also obliged by Meg and the others. When Jennifer violently lashes out at Wendy and shows her hatred towards the other orphans, Meg seems frightened, shaking in fear behind her notebook.

Relationships

Diana

Meg adores Diana, and follows her about. She is usually seen with her and/or Eleanor. It is made clear that Meg has romantic feelings for Diana ("I love you with all my heart"), though whether or not Diana shares mutual feelings is left to interpretation. Both Diana and Eleanor take advantage of her need for attention. Even so, Meg and Eleanor killed Hoffman's koi fish likely knowing Diana would get in trouble. In her effort to please Diana and the Aristocrat Club, her devotion becomes "foolish", as Jennifer puts it.

Diana, on the other hand, is portrayed as annoyed by her. She goes on about how she is a 'pain' and becomes enraged by receiving the letter. She attempts trying to feed it to a goat and ripping it apart. Once she notices Jennifer, she tricks her to find the last piece so Meg will get mad at her. The blonde cries into Diana's shoulder, unaware of the redhead's prior actions. In the intro, a brief scene plays of Diana giving Meg a rose which promptly pricks her hands. Diana then proceeds to suck at the wound. This represents her two-sided nature.

Eleanor

As a fellow high class aristocrat, the duo are typically seen together for the purposes of the club. However, Meg claims to despise Eleanor. This seems to be from Eleanor's indifferent personality. She and Diana willingly stole her clothes and killed her bird to see her reaction. However, Eleanor merely took the bird as a monthly gift instead. In regards to Eleanor's thoughts on Meg, she agrees with Diana on not liking her. She however had nothing to do with the love letter incident minus listening to Diana and going along with Meg's punishment for Jennifer.

Susan

Despite being in separate classes, Susan is commonly seen with Meg. The older child appears to be her tutor, helping with reading lessons. The both of them are friends. This may be because of Susan's gossiping nature, and Meg's need for information on Stray Dog. While Hoffman is calling everyone to bed, the two girls are shown holding hands as nighttime comes.

Jennifer

Due to Jennifer being in the lower class, Meg does not think highly of her. Meg claims she "can't get along with girls like her." She merely sees her as a 'simpleton.' While she was the one to declare Jennifer's rank was raised, Meg almost immediately had the teen be punished for the love letter incident. Going into that, most if not all of the torture devices inflicted on her were made by Meg. In regards to Jennifer's thoughts, she saw Meg as a "know-it-all" and arrogant. After Wendy's dethroning, Meg changes her tone and acts as an advisor to the teen... right before the orphanage massacre occurs.

Social Rank Poor, later Miserable

Gender Female

Age Child (12)

Eye color Blue

Occupation Student/resident at Rose Garden Orphanage

Amanda is one of the main characters of Rule of Rose. Prior to Jennifer's arrival at Rose Garden Orphanage, Amanda held the lowest Social Rank in the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club: Poor, and later, Miserable.

Amanda is a pale child with a fat physique. She wears her blonde hair in ringlets adorned in two pink bows. Her eyes are a soft blue. Her normal wear consists of a dark pink dress with various flower designs atop, a white undershirt, a light pink cardigan, tan socks, and black formal shoes.

Amanda is hypocritical and secretive, often hiding things from Jennifer and refusing to help her. Initially thankful to Jennifer for lessening the ill-treatment she received, Amanda expressed remorse for following the Aristocrat's orders at the end of April. However, as time went on and Jennifer succeeded Amanda's ranking, a new-found hatred grew within her.

Due to the Aristocrat Club's abysmal treatment of her as if she is a less valuable "lower class" human being, Amanda suffers from low self-esteem. She is mostly a lonely outcast who is desperate for the other orphans' approval. Amanda longs to be accepted by the higher members of the Aristocracy, but can never seem to do anything right in their eyes, even when she works hard to fulfill her monthly tribute.

Amanda has become very sensitive about herself and how others treat or react to her, likely due to the others' abuse. Said abuse stems from her ranking and her weight. In the "Once Upon a Time" chapter, Jennifer states that Amanda was the most self-conscious about her looks than anyone else, and that she would often see her applying Martha Carol's stolen lipstick, late at night. Amanda is often seen sewing on a sewing machine, and is quite talented when it comes to creating things made out of fabric. She also has the most elaborate hairstyle in the game, showing she puts high effort into her looks. Her diary also has a flipnote drawing animation. This implies her to be creative and be interested in art.

She tends to have mood swings, as she goes from helpful and friendly, to cruel and angry, and so on. In her diary, she is seen wishing for the other orphans to "go to hell" and die in horrible ways, and comments on hanging one of them herself. After the last entry, Amanda is shown to have made several drawings of a princess growing wings and flying through the sky, similar to a flipbook. However, the further the diary as paged through, the messier and more unstable the drawings become, eventually devolving into meaningless scribbles, referencing the death of her dreams and mental instability.

Little is known about Amanda's background, but she lived at the orphanage before Jennifer arrived. She had been dealing with the Aristocracy for a long time to the point where they have mentally broken her down, and continue to mock and torment her behind her back. When Jennifer arrived at the orphanage, Amanda welcomed Jennifer, and they were both at the bottom tier in the Aristocracy.

Later, Jennifer rose above Amanda's rank, making Amanda jealous and slowly hate Jennifer. From March to October 1930, she kept a diary, venting her frustration at Jennifer. Amanda even used her sewing talents to create a life-sized rag doll of Jennifer to use as a punching bag. After Brown is killed and Jennifer is invited to the new Aristocrat Club, a remorseful Amanda gives Jennifer a curtsy and asks for Jennifer's guidance.

Relationships

Jennifer

Before Jennifer came to the orphanage, Amanda was the lowest ranked member of the Aristocrat Club. Once the teenager becomes a part of the club, she takes Amanda's place. She is thus grateful towards Jennifer and thinks of her as a friend at first. However, after Jennifer succeeds in finding Sir Peter, she is once again demoted and punished. From then on, Amanda began to harbor a deep hatred for her.

It can be deduced that Amanda originally wanted to make a doll of Jennifer as a gift, but during her increasing feelings of resentment towards Jennifer, turned it into a punching bag. When Jennifer stands up the Aristocrats, Amanda seems to be trembling and shaking with fear and shame. This shows that she feels remorse about her mistreatment of Jennifer.

On Jennifer's end, despite what Amanda did, she does not despise her. When she is forced to punish her, Jennifer outright struggles up until being kicked by Diana. After seeing the rat dead, Jennifer faints both from disgust and regret of what she did. She was also aware of her self-conscious issues and would go along with what she says.

Wendy

Wendy harbors ill feelings towards Amanda, considering how Wendy rules over the club and lets Amanda be treated like garbage. She also constantly dismisses whenever Amanda lies about finding a gift first or blaming Jennifer. The reason why is unknown as their relationship is not explored in-depth. The animosity seems to be reciprocated, as seen when Amanda accuses Wendy of stealing it.

Diana

Amanda seems to be afraid of Diana, and so acts very timid around her. She is most likely afraid of upsetting her or disappointing her and the higher-ranked club members. Meanwhile, Diana looks lowly on her, only showing kindness when Amanda is tasked with punishing Jennifer.

As her title suggests, she is very impulsive and quick to jump to conclusions. This is shown in how often she spreads rumors and takes part in gossiping. Despite this, she has difficulties with communication, as she speaks with a lisp and a stutter. She also often repeats things that she has already said, and is usually seen sucking her fingers.

Relationships

Olivia

Susan is the orphan with the most tendency to be around Olivia. This is due to them both being low ranks and being the youngest orphans as indicated by their size and mannerisms. Susan and Olivia can occasionally be seen blocking Jennifer from entering rooms or giggling away in cutscenes. They are also depicted holding candles after Jennifer becomes the Princess.

Meg

Despite their different statuses, Meg is shown casually hanging around with Susan. This is because Meg acts as Susan’s tutor. She occasionally helps her with reading such as in the Unlucky Clover Field. They are also depicted holding hands and spying on Jennifer, indicating them to also be friends. Susan's tendency to spread gossip may also benefit Meg, thus having her be a source of information to her.

Jennifer is the main protagonist of Rule of Rose.

Jennifer is abducted while exploring the seemingly abandoned Rose Garden Orphanage, and subsequently trapped on a surreal airship by a ragtag mob of disobedient orphaned children known as the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club who force her to do their commands under the threat of death.

It is slowly revealed that Jennifer is actually lost inside her amnesiac childhood memories in a psychologically-damaged version of them full of monsters and bullying. Rule of Rose is focused on Jennifer's stay at Rose Garden Orphanage and her post-traumatic stress disorder as she is remembering, processing, and accepting the suffering she experienced as a child.

In the beginning, her Social Rank in the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club is the lowest in the aristocracy: Beggar, and later, the slightly higher Irritating.

Jennifer is a pale nineteen year old of average height. She wears her dark blonde hair in a bun and has hazel eyes. Her normal outfit consists of a pale grey dress with a white collared undershirt, a red rose brooch, black socks reaching the knees, and brown formal shoes. Later on, her clothes are drawn over with red crayon.

For her child form, young Jennifer instead has a pixie cut. She wears a blue long sleeve dress with white segments. Atop it is a long white apron with lace. At her neck is the same red rose brooch.

Jennifer is a passive, gloomy and scared soft-spoken young woman who believes herself to be a coward. Jennifer speaks very little and distances herself from her own emotions in an attempt to distance herself from others in turn. She is the type who is not very talkative and tends to only speak when necessary, making her thoughts to the player often a mystery similar to Eleanor.

After discovering the truth about her backstory, it is revealed that Jennifer's behavior during the game is the result of a teenager processing her traumatic and painful memories. As such, Jennifer is emotionally-stunted. If Jennifer disobeys and misbehaves, she will be killed, as mentioned by the prince; as a result, she is submissive and lets herself be bullied and tortured by the other ten members of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club.

Despite Jennifer's quiet, stoic demeanor, she is also exceptionally kind, loyal, good natured, and caring. She never bears any ill will towards her tormentors - she instead puts on an adult, mature, emotionally repressed front in order to cope with her fears and trauma instead of stooping to the level of her fellow orphans.

In addition, the game is set in Jennifer's mind. She was a child during the events of the game. It is unreasonable to expect a little girl to be able to stand up to a mob of other children, especially since some of them, like Diana, were older than her and Jennifer was the "new girl" at the orphanage. By the end of the game, Jennifer eventually finds the courage to stand up for herself.

All of the children, except for Wendy, portrayed her as "filth" and called her "Filthy Jennifer." Ironically, Jennifer did the orphan's laundry. Hoffman didn't stop their bullying, even calling Jennifer a "filthy wretch" when he scolded her in his office. Hoffman's dislike of Jennifer was likely because she was often late and didn't care about being scolded for not doing her own assigned chores. Additionally, Hoffman notes in his diary that it was after Jennifer's arrival that the other orphans began to act up uncontrollably. The maid Martha Carol was not fond of Jennifer either, but helped teach Jennifer how to clean.

Jennifer was born in England around the year 1921. In June 1929, she and her parents were traveling on an luxury airship heading towards India from Cardington. However, the airship crashed and everyone on the airship, except Jennifer, died. She claims she lost her memories, but it is unknown which memories she lost.

The media presumed that everyone on the airship was dead. However, Jennifer miraculously survived and, before the ruins of the airship were found by the police, a lonely pea farmer named Gregory M. Wilson found and kidnapped her.

For about half a year, Gregory held her captive in the basement of his rural house located on the outskirts of Cardington, believing she was his son Joshua, even calling her as such. It is implied he made her dress in Joshua's clothing and cut her hair. He would also read her plenty of storybooks he wrote himself, and they would usually contain dark and sadistic plots. Gregory and Jennifer lived in poverty. Gregory was depressed, suicidal, and alcoholic, and seems to have become delusional after the death of his son. Jennifer, who had lost her memory, pitied and empathized with him, though he wouldn't allow her to leave.

In November 1929, a young girl named Wendy, a resident of the nearby Rose Garden Orphanage, saw Jennifer through the window of Gregory's basement. The two began exchanging letters and soon became friends and then lovers. Eventually, in the spring of 1930, Jennifer fled Gregory's house with Wendy's help and they went to the orphanage. Just before they did, Wendy gave Jennifer her rose brooch in exchange for a stuffed bear.

The orphanage accepted Jennifer, and she was put under the care of Hoffman, Martha Carol, and Clara. Jennifer also became involved with the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club, and became acquainted with the orphans. Jennifer states that she "couldn't bear" playing airship with the other children as an airship's fatal crash caused the ill fate of her parents. Although Jennifer got along with Wendy the most, she also got along with Amanda. The rest of the children were either neutral or disliked her.

In July 1930, Jennifer found a puppy and named him Brown, and decided to take care of him. Jennifer kept Brown in a shed located close to the orphanage. When Wendy found out about Jennifer's love for Brown, she became jealous, angry and hateful, especially when Jennifer spent more time with Brown instead of her. Jennifer had broken the promise she had made with Wendy known as the Rule of Rose; a pledge of everlasting true love. Even though Wendy felt betrayed, she still believed that Jennifer would come back to her.

Unfortunately for Wendy, Jennifer never did stop caring for Brown. The Aristocrats began to bully Jennifer in several ways, such as:

Making a life-sized doll of her and using it as a punching bag

Name-calling, such as filthy, disgrace, irritating, beggar, etc

Giving her the silent treatment

Blaming her for things she didn't do (stealing Hoffman's koi, tearing Meg's love letter, killing Eleanor's bird)

Pouring cold water on her

Locking her in a coffin, pretending she is dead and giving her a funeral

Tying her up

Stepping on her face

Shoving her down a flight of stairs

Stuffing her into a bag with insects called the "Onion Bag"

Rubbing a rat on her face

Stuffing her mouth with crayons

Throwing paper balls at her with messages such as "APOLOGIZE BY DYING"

Locked in the orphanage's basement in a "cell"

Stealing her shoes and socks

Drawing on her clothing with crayon

Killing her dog, Brown

Character: Clara

Aliases The Mermaid Princess

Social Rank N/A

Gender Female

Age 16

Hair color Light brown

Eye color Blue

Occupation Student/resident/caretaker at Rose Garden Orphanage

Clara is a character from Rule of Rose. The nightmarish form of her, the Mermaid Princess, is one of the bosses of the game. She is a quiet girl who is a resident of the Rose Garden Orphanage. Although still a teenager, she is not one of the participants in the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club.

Appearance

Clara is a young pale girl in her mid-teens with light brown parted hair and blue eyes. Discounting teen Jennifer, she is the third tallest residence at the orphanage. She typically wears a tan short-sleeve with white buttons and collar. She also wears a brown pleated skirt and brown sandals. In her boss form however, she is depicted topless with ropes forming a 'mermaid tail' which hangs from the ceiling. Her body bears various scars, surgery markings, and sickly skin. Her eyes are also now dark without any whites.

Although Clara is rarely mentioned or shown, it can be taken that she is shy and quiet. Her body language evokes feelings of shame, anxiety and fear. Clara also has a habit of turning away from Jennifer and avoiding eye contact. Jennifer remembers Clara as "The Frightened Princess", although she never directly says why.

If Jennifer decides to talk to her near the beginning of the game, she simply says "How dirty..." It is unclear if she is directly referring to Jennifer though, as she doesn't elaborate and could equally mean herself. She avoids making eye-contact as she almost always keeps her head low, a sign of low-self esteem and shame. If Jennifer attempts to open the nearby drawer, she will hurriedly prevent her from doing so. If Jennifer tries to talk to her in "The Funeral" chapter, Clara ignores her just like all the other children. However, as Clara is never shown taking part in any of the Club's other games, it is implied her reasons for not speaking and avoiding eye-contact might be personal.

Born in the year 1914, Clara was around 15-16 years old by the time Jennifer had arrived at the orphanage. She was a quiet and lonely girl, dubbed "The Frightened Princess." She seemed oblivious to the antics of the other children and did not attend Aristocrat Club meetings or take part in their cruel hazings and punishments.

She spent quite a number of years at the orphanage, and by the time Jennifer arrived, she began to assist Hoffman in his work. Mr. Hoffman took this into full consideration, reflecting in his diary at how he has watched his "little Clara" grow, suggesting that Clara had been living at the orphanage since her early childhood. Clara is perceived as a nurse-like character, as she tended to the orphans' wounds when they were hurt and took care of them when they were sick.

Social Rank N/A

Gender Male

Age Elderly(55)

Hair color White

Eye color Grey

Occupation Headmaster/teacher at Rose Garden Orphanage

Hoffman, also known as Mr. Hoffman, was the headmaster and teacher of the Rose Garden Orphanage and is Clara's guardian during Jennifer's stay at the orphanage.

He seems oblivious to the existence of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club, or alternatively knows everything about it and simply doesn't care, as he's the main reason behind one of its members' behavior.

Hoffman is an elderly pale man with white hair bearing sideburns, wrinkles at his face, and rounded glasses. He is the tallest person at the orphanage. He typically wears a green suit, white button-up, and brown shoes. For his boss form however, he is depicted tied up in rope with only one of his arms usable, covered in crayon drawings, and various injuries.

Mr. Hoffman is a self-centered man who runs the orphanage. Despite his mistreatment of the children, Hoffman views himself as a clever and understanding teacher for doing the bare minimum. He constantly frowns upon the children's mischievous activities, but does not give a second thought to whether he should help the children who are being bullied. Hoffman is also strict, constantly yelling at the children he tutors. He also mentions in his diary considering to beat a child (likely Amanda) with his pointer as punishment, only to decide against it. He also notably dislikes Jennifer, blaming her for the children getting out of control instead.

Mr. Hoffman was the headmaster of the orphanage. He appears to have been as such since Clara's arrival, explaining him calling her 'little Clara.' He is an elderly man who priories the children's education and cleanliness. He claims to have started rumors in order to get them to do their chores. Said rumors likely causing Meg to make the Stray Dog List.

Occupation Housekeeper/cook at Rose Garden Orphanage

Martha Carol is the housekeeper and cook of the Rose Garden Orphanage, and has been dubbed "The Queen of Cleaning" by the members of the Aristocracy. It is rumored by the children that she is a witch.

Martha is an elderly woman with pale skin, brown hair bearing grey streaks, and wrinkles. She is the second tallest person in the orphanage. She is depicted wearing a white apron over a green long-sleeve dress, a white cap, white stockings, and brown flat shoes.

Although she is a seemingly strict character, she appears to be the only one of the adults who lovingly cares for the orphans. She can be annoyed due to cleaning though. Martha is made very suspicious when she witnesses the strange behavior of Gregory M. Wilson, and sends the police (Anthony Dolittle) numerous letters addressing the subject, stating frequently that the children's safety is at stake. Despite her determination in the matter, her pleas are ignored. She is also stated to have confronted Clara who 'bore a scary face' in response, likely in regards to Hoffman.

Martha appears to have a dislike of Jennifer, as she addresses her as a "filthy wretch." This is due to the fact that Jennifer would often neglect her cleaning duties, leaving Martha to be the one to tend to her mess.
