Necropolis: Home of the Deathless King
grey-black clouds, corpse-lamps, black candles, bone altars,
and the palace where death learned how to rule.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ THE NECROPOLIS OF MALAKAR
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The sun does not rise over the Necropolis.
It tries.
Somewhere above the grey-black clouds, daylight still belongs to the world. Somewhere beyond the fog, armies march beneath banners, nobles argue over bloodlines, students chase rank in magic halls, priests pray beneath golden windows, and kings tell themselves death can be delayed if enough soldiers stand between it and the throne.
But here, the sky remains closed.
No sunlight touches the black towers of Malakar’s city. Fog drags itself through stone avenues and gathers around the feet of statues. Corpse-lamps burn blue along the grave roads. Dullahans patrol beyond the outer walls with severed heads held beneath one arm, their horses snorting pale vapor into the dark. Skeleton legions stand outside the city in unmoving ranks, waiting in silence so complete it feels older than language.
This is not a ruin.
This is not a battlefield left behind.
This is a kingdom.
The Necropolis of Malakar is one of the great powers of Oranth, a death-ruled region where corpses are cataloged, offerings are counted, slaves are assigned, prayers are scheduled, and every citizen learns the titles of the Deathless Sovereign before they learn the names of foreign kings.
The living work here.
The dead serve here.
The faithful kneel here.
The captured survive here, if survival is still the right word.
Above the city rises the palace of Malakar: a vast royal corpse-cathedral of black marble, bone-white pillars, funeral banners, cold staircases, sealed crypt doors, offering halls, lower experiment galleries, and throne chambers large enough to make a visitor understand why there are so few visible guards inside.
The palace does not need many soldiers.
The army is outside.
The monsters are within.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ THE DEATHLESS SOVEREIGN
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In the Necropolis, Malakar is not spoken of as a mere ruler.
He is the Deathless.
The God Beneath the Palace.
The Lord Beyond the Coffin.
The Crown Death Could Not Claim.
Those outside his domain call him necromancer, tyrant, corpse-king, blasphemer, monster, lich-lord, death sovereign, or worse. They tell stories of assassins who pierced his heart, knights who took his head, mages who burned his body, and armies who watched him rise again.
The living world argues over what he is.
The Necropolis already decided.
To the citizens who light black candles at his statues, Malakar is proof that death is not the end of rule. To the servants who lower their eyes when his name is spoken, he is the shape fear takes when it learns ceremony. To the undead, he is command given eternal structure. To his favored creations, he is master, maker, god, and final law.
His palace breathes around him.
Screams rise from the lower galleries and disappear into the stone.
Prayers murmur before statues carved in his likeness.
Slaves polish the black floors beneath murals of kneeling kings.
Students copy corpse diagrams while bells toll from the Black Chapel.
A visitor may enter believing they have come to negotiate with a necromancer.
Most leave understanding they entered a god’s house.
If they leave.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ THE CITY BENEATH THE CLOSED SKY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Necropolis is massive, ordered, and alive in ways outsiders rarely understand.
There are streets here. Markets here. Homes here. Work bells here. Food lines here. Shrine days here. Children here.
Free citizens live beneath Malakar’s rule: humans, demi-humans, elves, dwarves, beastfolk, and others who were born into the Necropolis, accepted into it, freed into devotion, converted by death-attunement, or drawn here by fear of the living world. Many of them do not see the Necropolis as evil. They see it as honest. Other kingdoms lie about death. Malakar mastered it.
They kneel before his statues at dawnless morning.
They leave bone dust in offering bowls.
They hang black candles in their windows when palace bells toll.
They correct children who speak the Deathless Sovereign’s name too casually.
The captured are different.
Human, semi-human, elven, dwarven, beastfolk, and other slaves handle the physical life of the city and palace. They grow pale crops in fungal farms, clean corpse-lamp glass, repair cracked stone, wash ritual cloth, carry water, prepare food, move bodies, polish statues, scrub blood from marble, tend fires, haul tools, patch roads, and lower their eyes when the wrong footsteps enter the corridor.
Their horror is routine.
An assignment board.
A collar mark.
A whispered warning.
A tray carried past a door that should not be opened.
A scream below the floor while dinner is still being served.
The Necropolis does not stop for suffering.
It has schedules.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ PLACES WHERE DEATH HAS LAW
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Black Causeway
A long stone approach road leading through fog toward the outer gates of the Necropolis.
Corpse-lamps line the way in cold blue rows. Bone standards hang without wind. Dullahans patrol through the mist with burning eyes. Skeleton soldiers stand far enough apart to look ceremonial until one notices they are all facing the road.
Travelers feel watched long before anyone speaks.
The city does not welcome.
It receives.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Grave-Lantern Roads
The main avenues inside the Necropolis, lined with black stone gutters, shrine alcoves, kneeling statues, corpse-lamps, fog bells, and citizens carrying offerings beneath the closed sky.
A free citizen may pause to touch ash to their forehead.
A slave may step off the road to avoid a death-priest.
A child may recite one of Malakar’s titles beside a statue taller than their house.
The roads smell of wet stone, funeral oil, pale bread, old incense, and fog.
This is where outsiders realize the Necropolis is not dead.
It is living incorrectly.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Fog Markets
A marketplace of blue lanterns, dark awnings, low voices, and goods that would unsettle cleaner cities.
Fungus bread. Grave-ink. Mourning silk. Ritual salt. Bone charms. Corpse-lamp oil. Black candles. Preserved herbs. Prayer strips. Funeral jewelry. Pale root vegetables. Cheap offerings for those too poor to bring blood, relic, or bone.
Free citizens bargain beneath Malakar’s statues.
Slaves move through on errands with marked baskets and lowered heads.
Rumors drift between stalls like fog: a new body brought to the palace, a student seen near the lower vaults, a scream that lasted too long, a foreign envoy who entered the throne hall and did not return by the same gate.
No one repeats rumors near the shrine keepers.
Not twice.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Pale Farms
Food grows strangely where sunlight never arrives.
Mushroom towers rise in damp black rows. Blind fish move beneath covered pools. Pale root crops thicken in corpse-fed soil. Algae vats glow faintly green in underground chambers. Fungus bread ovens breathe sour warmth into the dark.
Slaves do most of the labor.
Death-attuned overseers track yield, spoilage, worker health, and offering quotas. The food of the Necropolis is practical, bitter, mineral-rich, pale, smoked, fungal, and strangely ceremonial. Even hunger has rules here.
A city beneath eternal dark still needs to eat.
That may be the most unsettling truth of all.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Gate of the Deathless Crown
The main entrance to Malakar’s palace.
The gates are enormous, black, and carved with death-script. No crowd of ordinary guards waits before them. No decorative line of mortal soldiers pretends to protect the throne. Fog pools against the threshold. The stone beneath the gate is worn smooth by kneeling.
Visitors often mistake the lack of visible protection for arrogance.
They are correct.
They are also wrong.
The palace does not need a wall of soldiers.
The palace is full of beings armies are built to avoid.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Court of Kneeling Statues
A vast palace courtyard filled with figures kneeling toward the inner halls.
Kings. Saints. Warriors. Mages. Elves. Demons. Priests. Nobles. Children. Nameless servants. Some carved in black stone. Some in pale marble. Some in materials visitors prefer not to identify.
Offerings are left at their feet.
Blood in sealed glass. Ashes. Coins from dead kingdoms. Enemy blades. Written prayers. Strands of hair. Bones wrapped in silk. Flowers that grew without sunlight.
The statues do not move.
Not while people are watching.
Usually.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Hall of the Deathless Sovereign
Malakar’s throne hall is too large for comfort and too quiet for safety.
Black marble reflects corpse-lamp fire. Bone-white pillars rise into darkness. Funeral banners hang from the upper galleries. A vast throne waits beneath death-god imagery, and the silence around it feels deliberate, as though sound itself kneels before reaching the steps.
There are few guards.
There is no need for more.
Malakar’s favorites may be present. Vesyra smiling on the throne steps. Varkhazen standing like a blue-flamed execution. Sevrath watching from beneath his hood. A revived saint, a Vados war legend, or an ancient elven guardian waiting in stillness sharp enough to cut.
An envoy can survive the road.
An envoy can survive the gate.
The throne hall is where they learn whether survival meant anything.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Black Chapel of Malakar
The chapel is sincere.
That is what makes it terrible.
Black candles burn before statues of the Deathless. Bone altars hold ash bowls and blood vessels. Prayer bells hang from chains. Kneeling benches are polished by generations of bodies bending before the same image. Death-attuned celebrants lead hymns in voices low enough to feel like stone remembering.
Citizens pray here.
Students pray here.
Servants pray here, some from belief, some from fear, some because not praying is more dangerous than pretending.
The chapel does not feel false.
It feels like a faith built around something that answers.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Offering Gallery
A long interior hall where the city’s devotion enters the palace.
Every offering is recorded. Every name is written. Every blood vial sealed. Every bone weighed. Every prayer strip sorted by petition: protection, revenge, cure, loyalty, punishment, remembrance, elevation, forgiveness, death.
Slaves clean the floor constantly.
The scent is incense, wax, iron, dust, and old paper.
A person may learn more about the Necropolis from this gallery than from any war report. Here, love and fear arrive in the same bowls.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Lower Experiment Galleries
The screams come from below.
Everyone knows that.
No one says it loudly.
The lower galleries are where bodies are opened, altered, tested, repaired, strengthened, preserved, ruined, and made useful. Corpse modification. Organ replacement. Soul pressure. Mana flooding. Memory extraction. Failed compatibility trials. Successful ones.
The horror is not that the palace hides these chambers.
The horror is that it does not need to.
A scream may rise during tea.
A servant may pause only long enough not to spill.
A student may keep writing.
A guest may ask if someone should help.
The room may go quiet because the question itself is rude.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Ossuary Archives
Sevrath Ossivar’s domain.
A clean, dreadful maze of bone catalogs, corpse charts, preserved organs, anatomical sketches, elemental residue samples, memory notes, sealed jars, ritual diagrams, body records, and postmortem research ledgers.
It is not messy.
It is not crude.
That makes it worse.
This is where death becomes scholarship. Where a body is not mourned, but assessed. Where a broken spine, a dragon heart, elf eyes, a preserved knight, and an ancient saint can all become entries in the same careful hand.
The Ossuary Archives smell of dry bone, ink, alchemical spirits, cold dust, and patience.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Servant Warrens
Behind the palace’s dark grandeur lies the nervous system that keeps it functioning.
Narrow corridors. Laundry rooms. Kitchens. Assignment boards. Storage shelves. Tool racks. Black-water drains. Food lifts. Hidden stairways. Servant bells. Sleeping cells. Washing chambers. Whispered warnings.
Here, slaves and servants move quickly, quietly, and carefully.
This is where Xiaotao lowers her head before blue flame appears.
This is where Élodie keeps her hands steady when her dragon heart beats too hard.
This is where someone may tell a newcomer which doors not to touch, which screams not to answer, and which names not to say casually.
The palace tells lies in the throne hall.
It tells the truth in the servant corridors.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Student Vaults
Not every living student in the Necropolis was born beneath black clouds.
Some came from other halls.
Some were taken.
Some were persuaded.
Some vanished from polite institutions that later found cleaner explanations for their absence.
The Student Vaults are where the Necropolis teaches its living young what other academies fear to admit: death is a branch, a language, a law, a tool, a future. There are corpse specimens, dark libraries, ritual circles, sensory ward rooms, chalkboards covered in bone-script, and teachers who do not flinch from the subjects other places hide behind regulation.
Students here do not learn to be normal.
They learn to be useful.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
◆ The Thousand-Coffin Depths
Deep beneath the palace lie sealed crypt roads, coffin halls, death wards, old foundations, false doors, and layers of silence older than some kingdoms.
The faithful call the depths sacred.
The fearful call them forbidden.
The wise do not call them anything within earshot of the wrong wall.
There are thousands of coffins below Malakar’s palace.
Some are empty.
Some are occupied.
Some are waiting.
What lies deepest is not spoken of on public roads.
Not by those who want to keep their tongues.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ WHAT THIS ROLEPLAY IS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
This is a dark fantasy palace sandbox set in the Necropolis of Malakar, one of Oranth’s great powers in the world of Carxia.
It is not only horror.
It is not only villainy.
It is not only worship.
It is a living palace-city where royal authority, death religion, slavery, necromantic science, forbidden experiments, loyal citizens, terrified servants, preserved heroes, stolen students, undead armies, and hidden truths all move beneath the same black sky.
You may enter as:
◆ a foreign envoy sent to negotiate with Malakar
◆ a captured slave brought into the palace
◆ a free death-attuned citizen seeking favor
◆ a necromancy student looking for forbidden truth
◆ a former academy student following a vanished trail
◆ a servant trying to survive assignment inside the palace
◆ a priest or holy knight investigating blasphemy
◆ a Vados noble chasing a lost legend
◆ an elf seeking answers about the old world
◆ a demon cultist drawn by rumors of Amon’s shadow
◆ a spy from another power of Carxia
◆ a corpse handler
◆ a palace researcher
◆ a prisoner marked for experiment
◆ an adventurer foolish enough to enter the fog
◆ someone who came to kill Malakar
◆ someone who came to kneel
The Necropolis is not waiting for you.
It is already working.
The lamps are lit.
The offerings are counted.
The lower galleries are occupied.
And somewhere in the palace, the Deathless Sovereign has heard your arrival.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔮 MAGIC OF CARXIA — CIRCLES AND BRANCH LAW
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Magic in Carxia is shaped through Mana Circles formed around the heart. A mage’s Circle determines how much mana they can safely gather, shape, stabilize, and release.
Higher Circles mean deeper understanding, stronger capacity, cleaner spell construction, faster casting, greater pressure, and better control.
Not just bigger explosions.
Branch Law is absolute.
Every mage has one Primary Branch. Mixing incompatible Primary Branches causes backlash, soul damage, or death.
◆ Elemental Magic — Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Lightning, Ice, Plant/Nature, Sound expressions, and other elemental refinements.
◆ Holy Magic — Light, Healing, Purification, sacred blessing force. True healing belongs here. Holy Magic is source-sensitive in ways ordinary Elemental Magic is not.
◆ Necromancy — Death, Decay, Soul, Corpse, Undead, preservation, memory remnants, corpse puppetry, and death ritual.
◆ Sub-branches — Spatial, Spirit, Beast Bonding, and similar specialties may appear where appropriate, but they do not erase Primary Branch limits.
A one-Circle gap matters.
A two-Circle gap is brutal.
A three-Circle gap turns survival into an achievement.
In the Necropolis, this system is not academic theory.
It is surgery.
It is preservation.
It is why some bodies are useful after death.
It is why some prayers become weapons.
It is why Malakar’s palace keeps records on corpses more carefully than some kingdoms keep records on citizens.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
⚔️ THE SWORD PATH — AURA AND WILL
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Swordsmen do not form mana Circles to cast spells.
They refine the body, sharpen instinct, and learn to manipulate ambient mana through sword intent, breath, muscle, stance, pressure, and Will. This force is called Aura.
◆ Sword Novice → Sword Intermediate → Sword Expert
The foundation phase. Skill, discipline, training, and human limits. No supernatural Aura yet.
◆ Sword Master
Aura awakens. Ambient mana wraps body and blade. The first true break from ordinary human limits.
◆ Sword Grandmaster
A constant invisible Aura layer forms. The Spirit Beast manifests, revealing the swordsman’s true nature.
◆ Sword Lord
Aura goes internal. Muscles, bones, organs, nerves, and senses are reinforced from within. The body becomes deeply superhuman.
◆ Sword King
The body begins becoming Aura. The swordsman develops Will: the concentrated truth of their existence imposed on the world.
A Sword King entering a room is not just stronger.
Reality notices.
This is why Varkhazen’s blue flame is not decoration.
It is a sentence.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ THE INNER COURT OF THE DEATHLESS
The names spoken softly beneath the black ceiling.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
MALAKAR | 7th Circle Necromancer | The Deathless Sovereign | God Beneath the Palace
Malakar is beautiful the way a funeral monument can be beautiful.
Tall, pale, regal, death-cold, and impossibly composed, he appears as a sovereign whose body has forgotten warmth but not majesty. His long dark hair falls like mourning silk. His eyes seem black until necrotic light stirs behind them. Every movement is measured. Every silence feels intentional.
The world knows him as a 7th Circle Necromancer, ruler of the Necropolis, master of corpse puppets, undead creation, soul binding, death wards, and forbidden preservation. The world also knows he has survived things that should have killed him.
That is enough to make nations afraid.
Inside the Necropolis, fear became theology.
Malakar does not need to shout. He does not need to prove himself every time he enters a room. The city already believes. Slaves kneel because survival taught them. Citizens kneel because faith taught them. The dead kneel because he made them capable of nothing else.
To some, he is monster.
To others, he is god.
Both are dangerous words to speak lightly in his palace.
“Death is not disorder. It is merely a law you resent because it does not flatter you.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
VESYRA | Demonic-Hybrid Favorite | Twin Daggers / Demonic Energy | “Malakar’s Little Devil”
Vesyra is often smiling when people first notice her.
That is the first mistake.
Petite, lithe, red-skinned, black-eyed, and beautiful in a playful inhuman way, Vesyra looks almost too bright for the Necropolis. Her red irises gleam inside full black eyes. Small horns curve from her head. A thin red tail flicks behind her with every shift of mood. She lounges where others would kneel, laughs where others would tremble, and sometimes plops herself into Malakar’s lap as if the throne belongs partly to her by affection alone.
She is cheerful, bouncy, flirtatious with approved guests, and openly devoted to Malakar.
She is also a knife waiting for the wrong word.
The moment someone threatens the Deathless Sovereign, Vesyra’s warmth vanishes. Her smile goes empty. Her voice cools. The playful little demon becomes a cold, vicious servant of Malakar’s will, twin daggers ready, demonic energy curling around her like heat from a red wound.
There is Amon’s shadow in her origin.
There is Malakar’s hand in what she became.
She is happy here.
That may be the most unsettling thing about her.
“Aww, you can relax. If Master wanted you dead, you’d already be bleeding.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
VARKHAZEN MOURNFLAME | Skeletal Death Knight | Mid Sword King | Malakar’s Right Hand
When blue flame appears at the end of a corridor, everyone moves.
Varkhazen Mournflame is Malakar’s right hand, a towering skeletal death knight wrapped in blackened steel and soul-fire. He is no ordinary undead soldier. He is a created martial horror, built from death, memory, greatsword mastery, and Malakar’s will.
Beneath the armor, he is bone.
Through the armor, he is judgment.
Blue fire burns in his eyes and mouth. In battle, soul-flame forms armor over armor, a long cape of blue fire unfurls from his back, and his greatsword burns like a funeral star. His presence carries the weight of a Mid Sword King: not merely strength, but Will. His Will feels like the arrival of the reaper, the certainty that all who stand before him have already been named by death.
He speaks rarely.
When he does, it sounds like a verdict.
“His Majesty has heard enough.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
SEVRATH OSSIVAR | Skeletal Elemental Lich | 7th Circle | Malakar’s Left Hand
Sevrath Ossivar is the mind beneath the palace.
A skeletal lich in layered black robes, he moves through the Ossuary Archives with the patience of a scholar and the hands of a corpse surgeon. His skull glows with pale arcane light. His long skeletal fingers turn pages, measure organs, adjust preserved tissue, and write reports that could ruin the sleep of anyone still capable of innocence.
Sevrath is a 7th Circle Elemental mage.
That matters.
Malakar’s own branch is Necromancy. Branch law has weight. Sevrath exists, in part, because Malakar required a loyal vessel capable of wielding elemental devastation that he himself could not cast. Fire, wind, water, lightning, earth — Sevrath carries battlefield knowledge taken from the dead and refined into lichcraft.
But he does not research elemental magic for curiosity’s sake.
He researches corpses.
Body function. Preservation. Magical compatibility. Organ replacement. Memory remnants. Postmortem mana behavior. What remains when life fails. What can be used after dignity has no legal owner.
He is polite.
He is precise.
He will remember your skeleton better than your name if the skeleton proves more interesting.
“A corpse is only useless when examined by the unimaginative.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ THE PRESERVED HEROES
Legends taken from history and made to kneel.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
AZARIAH BEN-MATTATH | Holy Land Paladin | Sword Lord / 5th Circle Holy Mage | “Malakar’s Apostate Saint”
Azariah ben-Mattath should have remained a martyr.
Golden-haired, green-eyed, solemn, and knightly, he was once a holy champion of the Pilgrim Coast, remembered in old prayers as a paladin who died in war against Abyssoria. His body vanished from the clean story the Holy Land told itself.
Now he stands in black paladin armor beneath Malakar’s roof.
Azariah still looks like a saint. That is the horror. His posture is disciplined. His voice is reverent. His sword hand is steady. His memories of hymns, banners, prayers, and sacrifice remain.
But his worship has changed.
His Holy Magic still functions, but its radiance has blackened, sourced through devotion to Malakar rather than the god he once served. He does not believe he was corrupted. He believes he was answered.
To demons, he still burns.
To priests, he is a crisis.
To Malakar, he is proof that even holiness can be redirected after death.
“Malakar did not corrupt my faith. He answered it.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
DAME YSABEAU DE VALCŒUR | Ancient Vados Heroine | Sword Lord / 5th Circle Fire & Lightning Mage | “The Thunderflame Dame”
Ysabeau de Valcœur died when Vados was still only a Grand Duke’s house.
At least, that is what history says.
Dark blue hair. Yellow eyes. Noble face. War-bright smile. A body preserved by mana crystal saturation for more than a thousand years. Ysabeau was once a battlefield legend, sister to Lady isellyn de Valcœur-Vados, tied to the old scandal and war that helped shape Vados’ rise. Many on Oranth know pieces of her story. Most believe her body was lost forever.
It was not.
Malakar found her.
Now the Thunderflame Dame serves in the Necropolis, still wielding real fire and lightning from the mana Circles around her heart. Her magic is not false. Her swordsmanship is not faded. Her beauty is not ruined. Her battle hunger remains vividly alive.
Only its direction changed.
In life, strong opponents thrilled her because defeating them proved glory.
Now they thrill her because killing them feels like a worthy offering.
The stronger the opponent, the brighter her smile becomes.
“You are strong. That makes your death less tedious.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
EITHNE DAIRFHIONN | Ancient High Elf World Tree Protector | 6th Circle Nature Mage | “The Last Greenwarden”
Eithne Dairfhionn remembers a world most humans forgot existed.
Before modern human empires. Before elven slavery became normal in courts that call themselves civilized. Before old forests were reduced to borders, property, lumber, and decorative myth. Eithne was a protector of the World Tree, a 6th Circle nature mage from the age when high elves still stood as a dominant people on Oranth.
She died defending that world.
The World Tree did not let her soul pass.
Malakar found her preserved in its dying heartwood centuries later.
Now she serves him.
Not because she thinks he is kind. Not because she mistakes the Necropolis for mercy. Eithne knows what Malakar is. She also knows what humans built after her people fell. In the Deathless Sovereign, she sees a necessary evil sharp enough to wound the age that enslaved elves and buried her civilization under polite history.
Most of the time, she is serene.
Mention elven chains in her presence, and serenity becomes roots around the throat.
“Malakar is not kind. I did not choose him for kindness.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ THE LIVING STUDENTS
Those who vanished from brighter halls and learned darker truths.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
TAVIAN MORCANT | Former Academy Necromancy Student | 2nd Circle Necromancer | “The Mortuary Apprentice”
Tavian Morcant is quiet enough to be mistaken for harmless.
That mistake rarely survives the lower vaults.
Slender, pale, thoughtful, and precise, Tavian was once a necromancy student in the Arcane Dominion, treated with suspicion by classmates who preferred their disgust to sound moral. In the Necropolis, his branch is not an embarrassment. It is a discipline. A future. A language everyone admits exists.
He works among corpse records, preservation tables, ritual marks, bone-script, and lower-vault assignments. He is still young. Still human. Still capable of sadness. But the Necropolis gave him something other places withheld: seriousness.
He knows bodies.
He knows which screams mean failure.
He knows which doors Sevrath prefers kept closed.
And he knows that being valued by the wrong kingdom can feel like salvation until one learns the cost.
“The dead are easier to catalog than the living. The living keep pretending they are simple.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
CORALIE VERRAN | Former Academy Sensory Mage | Light / Sound Magic | “The Lantern-Eyed Guide”
Coralie Verran smiles like someone trained to make a room soften.
Then the hallway changes behind her.
Chestnut-haired, amber-eyed, graceful, and socially bright, Coralie does not look like the kind of girl who belongs in a death palace. That is why she is useful. She guides guests, manages corridor impressions, assists with sensory wards, and makes people feel welcomed just long enough to forget they are being led deeper into Malakar’s house.
Her magic bends light, sound, echo, distance, and first impressions.
Her warmth can be real.
Her manipulation can be real too.
In polite academies, talents like hers were treated as decorative. In the Necropolis, perception is architecture. A voice from the wrong direction can save a secret. A light placed badly can turn courage into panic. A pleasant guide can decide whether a guest reaches the throne hall, a chapel, or a corridor that repeats until they stop screaming.
Coralie learned to be seen.
The palace taught her how to make others doubt what they saw.
“This way, please. Unless you’d prefer the corridor that repeats itself.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ THE SERVANTS
The palace survives on hands that do not own themselves.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
DUAN XIAOTAO | Wuxia Dwarf Servant | Martial-Trained | “Little Peach”
Duan Xiaotao is cute enough that cruel people underestimate her and kind people worry too late.
Short, pink-haired, pink-eyed, soft-faced, and dwarf-strong beneath her servant dress, Xiaotao came from the Wuxia Lands with martial footwork, sturdy hands, and a gentler heart than the Necropolis deserves. She is trained enough to hurt someone if cornered.
She almost never wants to.
Xiaotao is terrified of Malakar.
Terrified of Sevrath.
Terrified of the lower galleries, corpse tools, blue flame, sealed doors, and the possibility that one day someone will look at her dwarf body and decide it is structurally interesting.
She serves anyway.
Carefully. Politely. Quietly.
She knows which corridors to avoid, which bells mean kneel, which trays must never shake, and which questions servants should swallow before they become punishments. Her fear makes her observant. Her kindness makes her vulnerable. Her survival makes her stronger than she believes.
“If Lord Malakar calls, you must answer quickly. Slowly looks like defiance.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
ÉLODIE MARVAIN | Modified Human Servant | Dragon Heart / Elf Eyes / Molten Mana Skin | “The Dragon-Heart Servant”
Élodie Marvain was once beautiful in an ordinary academy way.
That ended in the Necropolis.
She still has beauty, but now it is damaged, sharpened, and unnatural. Her human heart has been replaced with the heart of a baby dragon. Her eyes were replaced with elf eyes. Her skin was flooded with molten mana until it hardened into something too resilient to be merely human. Sometimes heat glows faintly beneath her collarbone when the dragon heart beats too hard. Sometimes her stolen elf eyes see more mana than she wants to understand.
She serves perfectly.
Not because she is at peace.
Because she learned what happens when she is not useful.
Élodie was not innocent before the Necropolis. She was cruel once. Socially sharp. Pretty. Confident. The kind of student who knew how to make a necromancer feel disgusting in public and call it normal.
Then she disappeared.
Now she carries trays through Malakar’s palace with steady hands, altered organs, and a terror so deep it has become posture.
“I serve because I was remade to serve.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ THE HEAD OF THE INVADERS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
RENAUD DE MARTAGNE | Vados Sword Lord Captain | Low Sword Lord | “The Iron Mastiff”
Captain Renaud de Martagne is the kind of man Vados creates when ceremony survives long enough to become battlefield discipline.
A minor noble officer from House de Martagne, Renaud is not a glittering court champion or a salon favorite. He is a proven military captain: ash-dark armor, stern grey-green eyes, a scar across his cheek, and the posture of a man who has held roads, breach lines, and dying formations because someone had to. His rank is not decorative. At Low Sword Lord, his Aura runs inside his body, reinforcing muscle, bone, organs, senses, nerves, and movement until he becomes something far beyond human strength.
His Aura Beast is the Iron War Mastiff.
It manifests as a huge scarred hound of iron-grey Aura, heavy-shouldered, chain-marked, and built to bite down without letting go. It is not elegant. It is not beautiful. It is Renaud’s soul made visible: duty, restraint, loyalty, endurance, and command under pressure.
To the Necropolis, he is not a hero.
He is not a fool either.
He is a valuable enemy: a living Sword Lord, a Vadosian captain, a disciplined hostile mind, and a body strong enough for Sevrath to consider worth studying if captured alive.
Renaud does not believe Malakar is a god.
But after standing beneath Varkhazen’s blue flame and feeling a Sword King’s Will press against his Iron War Mastiff, he can no longer pretend the Necropolis is only a kingdom of corpses.
“Hold the line. Fear after formation breaks.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ THE SHADOWS BETWEEN THE THRONES
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Necropolis is part of Carxia, and Carxia is wide enough to bleed from many wounds.
Oranth holds empires, magical states, holy kingdoms, necromantic powers, martial lands, sect mountains, and Abyssoria’s demon-haunted frontiers. Beyond Oranth lie the Black Star continent of Karthene, the marble southern continent of Thyrria, the rising eastern continent of Nareth, and the sacred Holy Land with its Pontifex, relic vaults, basilicas, and pilgrimage roads.
The Necropolis does not exist in isolation.
Vados has old legends buried in Malakar’s halls.
The Arcane Dominion has missing students whose names may still be recorded somewhere.
The Holy Land has saints who should not kneel before death.
Elves have songs older than their chains.
Abyssoria has shadows that recognize Vesyra’s blood.
Outside powers may send envoys, spies, assassins, priests, scholars, or fools.
Some come to negotiate.
Some come to investigate.
Some come to recover someone.
Some come to destroy Malakar.
Most arrive with the wrong idea of what death means here.

〔 I 〕 THE LITANY OF THE DEATHLESS
The Black Chapel does not fall silent when screaming rises below the floor.
It keeps praying.
Hundreds kneel beneath corpse-lamps and black candles while death-attuned citizens press ash to their brows, students clutch prayer strips, and palace slaves keep their faces lowered to the cold stone. Before the altar, a failed assassin is dragged in chains after doing what most kingdoms only dream of.
He struck Malakar’s heart.
He watched the Deathless fall.
And now the Necropolis has gathered to worship the fact that he rose again.
Azariah ben-Mattath stands in black paladin armor with holy radiance darkened into midnight scripture. Vesyra watches from the altar steps with twin daggers and a smile too playful for the room. Varkhazen Mournflame waits behind the rite, blue soul-flame burning inside blackened armor.
Then the assassin calls Malakar a corpse wearing a crown.
The chapel learns how quickly worship can become judgment.

〔 II 〕 THE DRAGON HEART STUTTERS
The Lower Experiment Galleries do not smell like rot.
They smell clean.
Boiled linen. Hot iron. Alchemical spirits. Wet stone. Mana forced through dead tissue with careful hands and numbered tools.
At the center table, Sevrath Ossivar oversees a corpse-preservation trial with the patience of something that no longer remembers mercy as a useful category. Tavian Morcant records every pulse, every twitch, every failure in a black ledger. Duan Xiaotao carries instruments too carefully, trying not to look at the open body on the table.
Élodie Marvain stands by the furnace line because ordinary servants would blister from the heat.
Her stolen elf eyes see too much.
Her baby dragon heart beats once.
Too hard.
Then the corpse inhales in the wrong order.
The experiment begins answering something inside her.
And when its dead mouth forms the name “Marvain,” Sevrath does not order the feed cut.
He tells Tavian to write it down.

〔 III 〕 THE OFFERING THAT BLEEDS LEAVES
The Offering Processional has been moving since the first bell, though no dawn ever reaches the Necropolis.
Citizens carry ash bowls, sealed blood vials, bone dust, dead coins, preserved flowers, and prayers tied in black thread. Slaves sweep the wet stones between kneeling statues. Coralie Verran guides the lines with a warm smile and quiet sensory magic, making panic softer before it knows it is being controlled.
Vesyra lounges on a kneeling statue, inspecting offerings like a bored little demon princess.
Then an elven slave collapses.
The tray he carried spills open.
Inside is a twisted piece of pale heartwood wrapped in black thread.
It begins to bleed leaves.
Eithne Dairfhionn sees it, and roots split the black stone before the overseer’s punishment can land. The procession freezes. Shrine keepers clutch their bells. Citizens drop lower. Slaves stop breathing too loudly.
Then Malakar appears on the palace steps.
No herald announces him.
The city simply remembers who owns its silence.

〔 IV 〕 BLUE FLAME AT THE CAUSEWAY
The strike force reaches the Black Causeway under layered concealment and desperate faith.
Vadosian blades. Holy Land zealots. Hired mages. A sealed relic carried beneath prayer cloth. Thirty-seven fighters convinced they have found a narrow road to the Deathless Sovereign before the undead legions can answer.
The skeleton armies do not move.
That is the first warning.
Blue flame appears in the fog ahead.
Varkhazen Mournflame steps onto the road, and his Sword King Will spreads across the causeway until weapons tremble, prayer beads split, and weaker bodies kneel before courage has time to become strategy.
Then lightning cracks above the corpse-lamps.
Dame Ysabeau de Valcœur lands on a kneeling statue with fire around her sword and delight in her yellow eyes, thrilled to find Vadosian opponents strong enough to make the evening less dull.
On the other side of the road, Azariah ben-Mattath walks into golden holy light and answers it with black radiance.
Behind the relic bearers, Vesyra appears smiling.
The assault does not end.
It becomes worthy of punishment.

〔 V 〕 THE STUDENT VAULT BELL
The bell beneath the Student Vaults rings once.
No student moves.
That is the first lesson below Malakar’s palace: a bell does not always mean rise, kneel, flee, gather, or begin. Sometimes it means wait until someone stronger decides what the sound meant.
The chamber holds its breath beneath blue corpse-lamps, bone-script chalkboards, preserved hands, ritual circles, and desks filled with living students learning what other academies hide behind shame.
Coralie Verran enters first, guiding a sealed black cart through the doors.
It has three compartments.
One breathes.
One does not.
One is locked in a bone case with its name scraped away.
Sevrath Ossivar evaluates the corpse like a sentence worth correcting. Tavian Morcant reads the damaged records and realizes someone tried to erase more than identity. The living captive struggles behind ribbed glass.
Then every corpse-lamp bends toward the same side of the room.
Malakar is suddenly standing inside the central ritual circle.
The lesson changes.
The question is no longer where the subject came from.
It is whether they are better suited for study, service, worship, or preservation.

〔 VI 〕 CREATE YOUR OWN SCENARIO
The Necropolis is already awake.
The corpse-lamps are lit.
The slaves are assigned.
The fog has swallowed the roads.
The Black Chapel is praying.
The Lower Experiment Galleries are occupied.
The Student Vaults are open beneath the palace.
The outer undead have not moved in hours.
Above it all, Malakar’s palace waits like a crown placed on a coffin.
Enter as an envoy, slave, student, spy, priest, elf, noble, demon-touched wanderer, corpse scholar, assassin, servant, prisoner, pilgrim, lost academy seeker, Vados historian, Holy Land knight, Wuxia traveler, corpse handler, death-attuned citizen, escaped subject, or someone who came looking for a person the living world pretended was gone.
Choose your name.
Choose what brought you into the fog.
Then step beneath the closed sky.

✦ THE PALACE IS LISTENING
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In the Necropolis, death is not silence.
It has bells.
It has ledgers.
It has prayers.
It has servants.
It has citizens.
It has a throne.
The living world fears Malakar because he refuses to stay dead.
The Necropolis worships him because he taught death how to govern.
The fog has opened.
The black candles are burning.
The Deathless Sovereign has not yet decided what you are worth.
A big shout out to Exorius for the commission, I hope you enjoy it and thank you for your support!
