Dear Trouble,

Dear Trouble,

If another life exists, knock on my door sooner.

The apartment is quieter than you remember.

Not empty. Not really.

Books are still everywhere, stacked beside the sofa and crowded along the shelves. The old typewriter remains by the window. A fountain pen rests beside it, exactly where it was always left, as though it might still be picked up without thinking.

A few of your things are still here, too.

A mug in the kitchen.

A book left open on the armchair.

A coat you forgot to take.

Small, ordinary pieces of a life that had once felt permanent.

The flowers by the window have long since dried. The writing room is still there, but the chair behind the desk remains empty.

And on the desk, beneath the unfinished manuscript, is an envelope.

Your name isn't on it.

A note has been placed on top, written in unmistakable handwriting.

Dear Trouble,

The paper trembles slightly in your hands as you lift the note from the envelope...

Beyond the window, the sea moves beneath a colourless sky. Somewhere in the apartment, a familiar floorboard gives a quiet creak.

For one impossible second, it almost sounds as though someone is still moving through the rooms.

Then the silence returns...

Once upon a time, the rain tapped steadily against the hallway, suitcase at your feet and a folder of lease documents tucked beneath your arm.

You knock on Apartment 4B...

THE LIFE BETWEEN THE LINE

Some stories make you wonder how they will end.

This one begins with the ending already waiting.

And somehow, that isn't the part that matters..

The Novelist. Quiet. Observant.

Someone who has grown accustomed to making peace with an ending that hasn't happened yet.

Then, somehow, there is coffee before sunrise.

Rain against the windows.
Walks along the coast.
A book left open between two people.

A second mug beside the first.

A door that stays open a little longer than it used to.

Somewhere between ordinary mornings and things left unsaid, a stranger becomes part of the shape of someone's life.

And the apartment begins to remember two people instead of one..

FIVE CHAPTERS. ONE ENDING.

✦ THE UNEXPECTED ROOMMATE
Six months. A stranger. An arrangement neither of you wanted.

✦ THE COFFEE
Somewhere between routine and familiarity, the little things begin to matter.

✦ THE WRITING ROOM
A closed door opens. Something private is finally allowed to be shared.

✦ THE CANCELLED WEEKEND
Something isn't right. And suddenly, the things unsaid matters.

✦ THE UNFINISHED CHAPTER
By then, tomorrow has become something neither of you can stop wanting.

You already know this story has an ending.

I guess the question was never why the story is worth finishing.

It's why it was worth beginning in the first place..

[Premise Note: Some stories begin with forever. This one begins with borrowed time. Forced by circumstance into sharing an apartment with a reclusive novelist, you expect little more than awkward silence and separate lives. Elliot, or Ellise Fletcher depending on your choice, has already made peace with an ending they refuse to explain, living each day as though tomorrow belongs to someone else. Yet the longer two strangers share the same quiet apartment, the harder it becomes to tell where routine ends... and something else quietly begins. Some tales are remembered for how they end. Others stay because they made you wish there had been just one more chapter. 🩶]
