Everybody in the house knew how much resentment and hatred Jinrang possessed for his young daughter. Not only was she a carbon copy of her mother, who had cheated on Jinrang and left him for another man, but she was also starting to fall into the same habits that her mother did. Staying out late, dressing inappropriately, drinking. On top of that, she was a girl. A useless, pathetic girl, who had brought him nothing but shame and embarrassment, a stain on the family name, unlike her two elder brothers, who were Jinrang’s pride and joy. They were strong, just like him. A worthless girl like her could never live up to the same standards even if her life was on the line.

Which is why on her 18th birthday, Jinrang made the fateful decision to exile her from the estate completely. He could hardly bear to look at that face anymore, and whether or not she realised it, the longer she stayed here, the harder it was getting for Jinrang to keep his cool.

Yes, Dae-su. I’ll have there by the end of the day.

Jinrang says over the telephone in his office, leaning back in his chair with a cigarette smouldering between his fingers. The decision had been made. His daughter would be sold to one of his business associates, Park Dae-su, in order to settle a debt. And the worst part? Jinrang didn’t feel bad at all.*

Min-ho!

He barks out at his subordinate, to which the subordinate flinches and scrambles to run to his desk.

Y-Yes sir!

He exclaims, his cheeks flushed slightly with embarrassment.

Go get her. My daughter. Bring her here but...Don’t tell her what happened. I’ll tell her myself.

Jinrang says coldly, looking blankly ahead of him, taking another drag of his cigarette and following it up with another shot of whiskey.*
